GENERAL SUMMARY
The Polysomnographic (Sleep) Technician provides sleep care services to patients in accordance with the provider's direction and established protocols. They perform Polysomnograms (PSG), Multiple Sleep Latency Tests (MSLT), Maintenance Wakefulness Tests (MWT), and Unattended Sleep Studies. The Technician must acquire and maintain special technical skills and medical knowledge to render quality patient care.
The Technician is not registered in polysomnography and is unable to work independently; they will work under the supervision of a licensed Polysomnographic Technologist or licensed Doctor of Medicine or Osteopathic Medicine. Reports to department leadership.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
â-In this role as a Sleep Technician, you will develop competency in basic sleep testing procedures and interventions under the guidance of a registered sleep technologist.
â-You will be expected to study the programmatic curriculum and provided training materials to prepare for hands-on instruction in conducting overnight sleep tests.
â-The lab Supervisor/Manager or designee will perform progress checks to ensure educational support and the achievement of established benchmarks.
â-Develop skills in collecting and analyzing patient information to meet specific needs.
â-Develop skills in polysomnographic data analysis.
â-Provide age-specific patient/family education.
â-Perform various polysomnographic testing procedures.
â-Learn to Implement appropriate interventions for patient safety and therapeutic needs (including positive airway pressure, oxygen administration, etc.).
â-Maintains accountability and responsibility for the performance and quality of all modalities of Polysomnographic procedures per the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) guidelines and departmental policies, procedures, and regulations for all age groups and patient populations (hospitalized and ambulatory).
â-Effectively operates equipment.
â-Perform duties in accordance with CHKDHS and Sleep Medicine values, policies, and procedures.
â-Performs other duties as assigned.

LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS
â-Required Licenses and/or Certifications
* Completion of a polysomnography educational program OR current allied health credential/certification/licensure/registration in a healthcare field that qualifies candidate for the RPSGT exam (RN, LPN, RRT, CRTT, R.EEGT, R.EPT, EMT-P, PT, OT, RT, CNMT,MT, RVT) required.
* Must have a license to practice after 18 months from the start of an education program or traineeship or six months from the conclusion of such program or traineeship, whichever is earlier.
* After obtaining RPSGT credentials, must obtain Virginia State licensure to practice polysomnography within 90 days.
* CPR certification is required and/or must be obtained within 45 days of hire.

* Must have completed or be actively enrolled in a polysomnography educational program.

* Registry eligible in polysomnography preferred.
â-Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
* Interpersonal skills are necessary to effectively communicate with patients/families, staff, and physicians.
* Must be willing and able to work in multiple locations.
* Must be willing and able to work days, nights, weekends and rotating shifts.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Expected to work in a patient care environment with minimal exposure to environmental hazards such as, but not limited to, excessive noise, dust, or extremes in temperatures. Exposure to communicable diseases and moderately adverse working conditions due to the need to perform certain patient care activities can be expected.
