Nature Of Work

An employee in this class is responsible for performing a variety of complex maintenance and/or specialized repair tasks in a repair shop or in the field. Work is of more than average difficulty and is performed on marine equipment that are gasoline and diesel powered. 12v, 24v and 120v electrical systems on board fire pumps and marine apparatus.

Employees assist in providing training to lower-level mechanics when performing more difficult tasks in an on-the-job training capacity, as well as checking the work of others for accuracy, completeness, and other purposes of quality control. Under general supervision, employees exercise reasonable initiative and independent judgment in completing assigned tasks and adhering to established rules and practices of safety. As well as in training others in the proper use of maintenance and repair tools and testing equipment for marine apparatus. Some positions require that the incumbent work night, holidays, and/or weekends. Work is reviewed through observation while in progress, operational sea trails and/or inspection upon completion.

Examples of Duties

Performs a variety of complex maintenance and/or specialized repair tasks on marine boats / vessels, marine fire suppression systems and life safety marine related equipment. Is able to work aboard boats and vessels when docked or while in operation. Is able to work at higher elevations to repair or replace components on a vessels / boats masts. Repairs and replaces mounted assemblies and components related to marine engines, transmissions / drivelines, steering systems and fire pumps.

Repairs wiring harnesses and electrical / electronic circuits requiring extensive technical expertise due to the location of the wiring and associated circuitry. Is able to work comfortably in confined spaces to maintain and repair components, throughout all boats and vessels. Performs major repairs to fire pumps, and fire fighting foam systems to include removal and replacement of foam pumps and flow meters. Diagnosis, calibrate and test firefighting foam systems. performs major engine tune-ups. Operates factory electronic software to monitor and test various components. Is able to comprehend diagnostic codes / electrical schematics and system printouts; performs major repairs to gasoline and/or diesel fuel systems; repairs, adjusts, removes, and replaces gasoline and/or diesel engine short blocks or any components of the block including accessory changeover.

Operates a variety boats / vessels and marine equipment in order to diagnose and evaluate system/equipment problems and either repairs or makes recommendations as to appropriate repair requirements; prepares estimates of accident damage; cleans boats and vessels to maintain a constant level of readiness. This is to include but not limited to the following, engine rooms and compartments, pump and foam system rooms, Operators station / bridge and work / storage areas.

Uses precision measuring equipment (veneer calibers, vibration analyzers, micrometers, etc.); fabricates specialized equipment; operates machine shop equipment (e.g., lathe, drill press, table saw, band saw), and cutting torches and welders (oxygen, acetylene, and electric); fits and installs hydraulic and pneumatic valves, compressors and pipes to facilitate installation or repairs. Accurately records time and information on work performed in Fleet Information System.

Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Considerable knowledge of: standard methods, practices, tools, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of diverse gasoline and diesel powered boats, vessels and marine equipment; mechanical, electrical and hydraulic principles as applied to maintenance and repairs of marine boats and equipment. Perform marine corrosion mitigation maintenance. Marine electronics repair and component installation. Marine Trailer maintenance and repair.

Working knowledge of: occupational hazards and safety precautions relating to marine boats, equipment maintenance and repair; safe methods used for hoisting and relocating heavy mechanisms.

Some knowledge of: operation and use of diverse marine boats and equipment.

Ability to: perform complex maintenance and/or specialized mechanical, electrical and hydraulic repairs; use and interpret wiring diagrams, blueprints and technical publications; operate testing equipment to detect system and equipment malfunctions and to identify repair requirements; perform tasks requiring physical strength and endurance; understand and follow oral and written instructions and prepare simple reports; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; inspect work of others and train lower level mechanics; operate a variety of marine vessels and systems.

Skills in: use and care of tools, machinery, and testing equipment utilized in complex maintenance and/or specialized repair of boats and equipment.

Physical Requirements

Mobility- very frequent standing; occasional sitting & walking frequent pushing, pulling, balancing, bending, twisting, kneeling, squatting; bending, overhead reaching, Lifting/Carrying-very frequent 40-60 pounds; Dexterity - frequent handling, reaching, grasping, and fingering; Hearing/Talking - frequent hearing and speaking normal speech and speaking loudly over equipment noise; occasional hearing/talking on a radio; Visual -occasional use of good overall vision, at normal or corrected to normal acuity; occasional use of depth perception and peripheral vision; occasional reading and close-up work, frequent computer monitors, attention to details, detailed inspection, monitoring equipment; Environmental - very frequent outdoors/indoors, dangerous equipment, exposure to varied weather conditions or working with hazardous materials, occasional exposure to dirt, dust, smoke, fumes, and odors; Emotional/Psychological - frequent concentration and working independently; Special Requirements - working overtime, weekends, nights, holidays and/or emergency call-back; occasional travel.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited high school or vocational school and one (1) year of experience with outboard engine experience, general boat maintenance, boat trailer maintenance, inboard marine engine maintenance repair and marine electrical system maintenance.

Licenses or Certifications

Must have 1 ABYC marine certification, marine trade school degree or a marine manufacturer certification from one of the following: Mercury, Mercruiser, Yamaha, Suzuki, Volvo, Iveco, Mann, Caterpillar, Cummins, Evinrude, Honda, Hyundia, FPT, MTU, Daihatsu, BMW.

Possession of a valid Florida driver's license.

Examination

Evaluation of education and experience. Drug testing is included in all pre-employment processing.

Comments

Employees may be required to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed. During periods when the Mayor issues an emergency declaration for the City of Tampa, all employees may be required to work in preparation, response or recovery activities related to the stated emergency.
