Job Description

POSITION PURPOSE:

This position reports to the Building Maintenance Supervisor and is responsible for new and repair carpentry and access work consisting of both rough and finish work involving the maintenance of various City owned facilities.

Essential Duties

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

* Constructs, installs, alters and repairs various types of wooden and other furnishings and structures involving the performance of hand bench, maintenance, rough and finish carpentry tasks, including shelves, cabinets, closets, benches, bookcases, doors, door hardware, locks, padlocks, windows, flooring, ceiling work, floor work, bleachers and indoor, outdoor recreation equipment and structures, etc.
* Erects, alters, replaces or removes interior and exterior trim work including plastering and dry walling.
* Constructs, shapes, and designs interior and exterior millwork as well as lays and alters various types of flooring and roofing.
* Works from sketches, blueprints and working drawings.
* Maintains, alters, and replaces keys, locks, and access related hardware.
* Keeps power equipment and hand tools in proper working condition as well as operating woodworking machines safely.
* Inspects furnishings and structures and recommends the necessary repairs, alterations and preventive maintenance programs.
* To be available and subject to call during emergency situations.
* Performs material take-offs.
* Maintains a consistent and reliable attendance record.
* Keeps inventory and does requisitioning / purchasing of materials and supplies.
* Ability to operate a personal computer including general navigation, email, and using finance software to enter credit card purchasing information.

ASSOCIATED DUTIES:

Performs related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

* Completion of a carpenter apprenticeship recognized by the Wisconsin Department of Industry, Labor and Human Relations or Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training, United States Department of Labor, and four (4) years of experience as a journeyman carpenter.

or

* Proven completion of a locksmith apprenticeship with heavy carpentry experience plus having successfully held a carpenter position for at least two years.
* Maintain a valid Wisconsin driver's license

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

* Thorough knowledge of the standards, practices, materials and processes of the carpentry and access/locksmith craft.
* Knowledge of the qualities, adaptability and uses of wood and hardware.
* Knowledge of building codes.
* Ability to analyze and work from blueprints and specifications.
* Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
* A positive team friendly attitude absolutely required and weighted as important as technical ability.

Preferred (not required) Experience:

Digital access experience (fob / swipe card) including installation, and service.

Best A4 access experience.

Supplemental Information

ENVIRONMENTAL/WORKING CONDITIONS OF THE POSITION:

Exposed to odors from cleaning chemicals, adhesives, silicones, caulking, paints, stains and other similar carpentry materials.

Exposed to noise from common tools and equipment used in the carpentry trade, as an example hammer drill, nail shooters, sawzall and table saw.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF POSITION:

Lifting, carrying, pulling up to 75 Pounds or less; working from scaffolding up to 30 feet in height, extension ladders up to 24 feet and 6 and 10-foot stepladders.

Standing, walking, stooping and bending.

EQUIPMENT USED:(These examples do not list all equipment to be used but are to be used as a guide).

Saws, belt and disc sanders, routers, planer, hammer drill, screw and nail shooters, ladders, scaffolding, drills and other similar carpentry and lock hardware equipment and tools, motor vehicle, snow blower, hand tools, etc.
