Job Description:

General Summary:
Under administrative supervision, the Visually Impaired Specialist provides assessment and consultant services to classroom teachers as well as direct instruction to pupils with visual impairments as needs are identified. Teaches special skills as needed which may include braille, typing, writing, daily living, and prevocational skills; develops goals and objectives for and works directly with individual visually impaired students

Essential Functions include, but are not limited to the following:*

Planning:
  • Designing the exceptional student education program so that it is consistent with the total educational philosophy of the school.
  • Continuing professional growth through educational meetings, visiting related facilities, reading professional literature, and exchanging ideas among the staff.
  • Working in coordination with other teachers in planning and developing the program.

Programming:
  • Preparing, implementing, and evaluating an annual educational plan for each student based on individually assessed needs in accordance with district procedures.
  • Using appropriate assessment instruments pertinent to instructional areas.
  • Preparing lesson plans for each student.
  • Providing appropriate schedules for exceptional students involving school personnel as required.
  • Seeking a variety of services through community resources and agencies to meet the needs of exceptional students.
  • Providing specialized instructional techniques and media through individual and/or group sessions designed to meet the educational, social and emotional needs of the students.
  • Participating in the in-school staffing and screening processes as appropriate.
  • Participating on evaluation teams for visually impaired students as appropriate.
  • Making instructional ideas and materials available to teacher's that are appropriate for the exceptional student within the classroom situation as requested.

Public Relations:
  • Cooperating with school personnel in coordinating services within the school.
  • Conferring with the classroom teacher as requested concerning any educational needs of the student.
  • Developing and conducting an in-service program to inform classroom teacher of the goals and objectives of the program and ways of achieving them in the school setting.
  • Assist in providing information to community groups and parents concerning programs as requested.
  • Assist in coordinating and providing news releases through the immediate supervisor for local news media as requested.

Reporting:
  • Ensuring that each student in the program has necessary evaluation records in his/her permanent folder.
  • Furnishing the principal with current exceptional student schedules.
  • Completing progress reports on each student in the program.
  • Supplying progress reports to school personnel and to parents of exceptional students as necessary and requested.
  • Completing reports for appropriate local, state, federal and educational agencies.
  • Referring those students who require further evaluation or follow-up services to the appropriate school personnel or community agencies.
  • Other responsibilities as directed by his/her immediate supervisor.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
  • Ability to teach children in grade levels and age ranges as assigned.
  • Ability to work with parents and community and to build positive relationships.
  • Knowledge of subject area and instructional methodologies and techniques.
  • Ability to provide training to students in home and school and neighborhood orientation and mobility through concept development, sensory development and orientation techniques.
  • Ability and willingness to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team.

Education and Experience:
  • Minimum BS Degree
  • Graduate work beyond the bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Possession of a valid California teaching credential authorizing specialized services for the visually impaired - prefer dual certification including Orientation and Mobility Certification).
  • Experience in an academic or school setting preferred.
  • Experience in completing functional vision, literacy modality, and orientation and mobility assessments and maintaining records and files.
