ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF HEALTH AND WELLNESS

VSC-UP BARGAINING UNIT, GRADE 14, EXEMPT

BASIC FUNCTION

Provide leadership, oversight, coordination, and evaluation of the activities and operations of student health and wellness services at one or more Vermont State University locations, including clinical practice, mental health/counseling, and wellness education. Coordinate health services activities with other location departments and outside agencies. Provide either direct health or counseling services to students.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage, implement, and evaluate activities and operations for student health and wellness services.
  • Promote a culture of continuous improvement to ensure that Health & Wellness services and programs through the University are equitable, inclusive, supportive of diverse needs, consistent, and accessible to all.
  • Manage and maintain budget for location(s).
  • Exercise supervisory authority over functional area staff, graduate assistants, interns, and student workers as appropriate.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with local health and wellness service providers.
  • Work with various campus constituents to develop and offer training programs to address the specific needs of various location constituents.
  • Coordinate and assist with implementation of public health protocols and emergency preparedness plans.
  • Assist with coordination of alcohol and other drug education and awareness via online tools, social media, and group education.
  • Assist with development and implementation of wellness education initiatives about nutrition, stress management and resiliency skills, sleep, sexual health, eating disorders, tobacco cessation, and other health promotion activities for physical and emotional health.
  • Collaborate with other departments of the University to support holistic student success and participate in appropriate interdepartmental committees and task forces.
  • Serve as a liaison and resource for location(s) on health and wellness issues, coordinating and supervising staff to ensure issues are addressed.
  • Collaborate with faculty to provide hands-on opportunities for students to pursue academic projects, research, or initiatives related to health and wellness.
  • Demonstrate inclusivity and provide excellent customer service in all modalities, including in-person, telephone, e-mail, video call, live chat, texting, and the like.
  • Keep abreast of current developments in clinical health, mental health counseling, and wellness education, especially as applicable to in-person and remote higher education.
  • Facilitate offering of community-based services such as HIV testing, depression and anxiety screening, and Planned Parenthood consultation days.
  • Assist with difficult or unusual tasks, resolve problems, and provide other needed support, including with students, staff, faculty, families, and external stakeholders.
  • Assist with communication about and implementation of guidelines and requirements from the Vermont State Department of Health.
  • Prepare various administrative reports; maintain system for secure, accurate recordkeeping; state and federal reporting; and location statistics.
  • Carry out the duties of the College Counselor as described in the job classification description.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Direct supervision is received by the Director of Health and Wellness

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

Direct supervision of functional area staff, graduate assistants, interns, and student workers.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Master's degree in appropriate discipline plus three or more years of relevant progressive experience in health and wellness administration, or a combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired. Appropriate license to provide direct counseling services and supervision of staff and graduate student interns.

Valid driver's license and willingness to obtain a VSC fleet license.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Master's degree in appropriate discipline with four to seven years relevant experience.

Knowledge:

  • Understanding of the educational goals and objectives of Vermont State University including attention to accessibility and diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Understanding of the psychological and cultural characteristics of economically and educationally disadvantaged students, particularly in a rural setting.
  • Awareness of developmental, holistic, and proactive approaches to student success.
  • Experience making data-informed decisions.

Skills:

  • Excellent interpersonal, supervisory, and communication skills.
  • Able to meet students where they are, ensure they feel listened to, and that they are comfortable working with an advisor to navigate challenges and concerns as they come up.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience with (or ability to learn) technologies such as Aviso, Colleague, Self-Service, Slate, Microsoft products, and Perceptive Content.
  • Proven record of accountability and follow-through with the ability to meet deadlines.

Abilities:

  • Demonstrated ability to positively influence student skill development, such as communication skills, leadership skills, academic skills, technical skills, non-cognitive or 'soft' skills, and social skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to foster student development in the attainment of student success goals, such as academic purpose, sense of belonging/identity, agency, career readiness, civic readiness, access & equity.
  • Demonstrated positive attitude regarding Vermont State University and a desire to improve student outcomes, including attention to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Demonstrated ability to support a diverse community and promote diverse perspectives and cultures in an inclusive environment.
  • Ability to work effectively with a wide range of individuals within the University and capacity to work as part of a team to collaborate and choose student success.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with college personnel as well as families/guardians and external resources in carrying out the various coordination, liaison, and advocacy aspects of the job.
  • Ability to work some weekends and evenings to provide student support outside of normal business hours.

Location: Castleton campus with possible travel to other campuses.
