Job Description

Job Summary:

Primary responsibilities include the utilization of highly skilled therapeutic and diagnostic techniques in the treatment of patients of all ages in all care settings.

Essential Job Duties:
  1. Performs and analyzes arterial and capillary sticks on infants and pediatric patients as applicable.
  2. Performs and interprets pulse oximetry, capnography and transcutaneous monitoring measurements.
  3. Serves as a consultant to physicians and department staff on matters of respiratory care. Evaluates the patients care plan upon request of a physician or other department personnel and makes recommendations for changes as appropriate.
  4. May be called upon to act in the absence of the supervisor as applicable.
  5. Completes other duties and special projects as assigned.
  6. Performs airway management techniques, including tracheostomy tube changes and elective intubation upon request of a physician if applicable.
  7. Provides therapy as needed in the Special Care Nursery such as oxygen therapy, treatments, or ventilator care if applicable.
  8. Performs invasive mechanical ventilation in compliance with physician order or per protocol, including special ventilator techniques, and monitors the patient's respiratory status and response.
  9. Proficient in all duties of a Respiratory Assistant and Respiratory Therapist II.

Secondary Job Duties That May be Reassigned:
  1. Assists in the blood gas quality assurance program.
  2. Actively participates in staff development activities such as in-service programs, procedure development, and equipment check-offs.
  3. Provides inter-hospital transportation of the critical ill patient when respiratory failure appears eminent, and the high risk obstetric patient.
  4. Actively participates in the department quality assurance program.


Qualifications

Job Specifications:
  • Education: Associate degree in Respiratory care or equivalent training required.
  • Experience: One year with emphasis on critical care.
  • License/Credentials: Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) through the National Board for Respiratory care AND licensed Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) through the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency.
