Education

Minimum: High School diploma. Graduate from a state accredited nursing program. Current State of Michigan Practical Nurse Licensure (LPN) required. Completes required elements to maintain Michigan Practical Nurse licensure. Must maintain current BLS certification and CEUs for re-licensure.

Related Experience

Minimum: Experience in a healthcare setting as an LPN.

Preferred: Hospital experience.

Computer Competency

Familiarity with standard desktop and Windows based computer system, including email, e-learning, intranet, and computer navigation. Ability to use other software required to perform essential functions.

Physical/Mental

Minimum: Physically and mentally capable of performing position requirements. Must be able to push, pull or lift a minimum of 35 pounds. Frequent standing, walking. Occasional bending stooping, twisting. Ability to hear speech, speak, use near-far vision and fine motor skills. Ability to perform continuously detailed tasks with frequent interruptions and work prioritization.

WORKING CONDITIONS

1. Works in a patient care environment. Includes exposure to conditions which may be considered particularly disagreeable to sight, touch, sound, smell and taste.

2. Works with patients that have infectious communicable diseases/viruses.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

* The LPN role works directly under the supervision of an RN.
* Assists the RN in the application of the nursing process to assigned patients.
* Provides or assists patients with ADLS.
* Documents assessments, interventions and patient response, and initiates care plans in the Electronic Health Record (EHR). Initiates care plans. A LICENSED REGISTERED NURSE COSIGNS ALL DOCUMENTATION BY THE LPN.

Monitoring and Maintenance of the following:

* Feeding Pump and Tubes
* Drains
* Specialty Beds
* Continuous and Intermittent Bladder Irrigation (according to unit specific competencies)
* Suction: NG, Salem, Hemovac, and Pleurevac.
* Foley and Suprapubic Cath Care
* Rectal Tubes

May Perform the following Clinical Skills:

* Medication Administration
* Oral (excluding narcotics)
* Rectal (excluding narcotics)
* IM (excluding narcotics)
* Sub-Q
* Eye and Ear Drops
* Topical
* Transdermal (excluding narcotics)
* Sublingual
* NG and Peg Tube Feeding and Meds (excludes narcotics)
* Foley Insertion and Discontinuation
* Suctioning
* Dressing Changes/Wound Care
* Trach Care
* Suture/Staple Removal
* Tube Feedings
* Vital Signs
* Enemas
* Insertion and D/C of peripheral IVs
* Vital Signs
* Blood Sugar Monitoring
* Bladder Scans
* Enemas

The following is NOT in the scope of the LPN role:

* Taking Physician Verbal or Phone Orders
* Maintaining and/or hanging IVs, IV Pump, PCAs, and IVPB
* Narcotic Administration
* Administering IVP medications
* Blood Transfusions
* Delegation
* Admissions and Discharges
* Disease specific patient education.
* EKG monitoring and Interpretation
* NG/Feeding Tube Insertion
