Responsibilities:

  • Patient Evaluation: Conduct comprehensive evaluations of patients presenting with musculoskeletal symptoms, including joint pain, stiffness, swelling, and reduced mobility, performing detailed medical histories, physical examinations, and diagnostic tests.
  • Diagnostic Testing: Order and interpret diagnostic tests, including laboratory tests (rheumatoid factor, anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide antibodies, antinuclear antibodies), imaging studies (X-rays, ultrasound, MRI), and joint aspiration, to establish accurate diagnoses and guide treatment decisions.
  • Treatment Planning: Develop individualized treatment plans based on diagnostic findings, disease activity, severity of symptoms, patient preferences, and functional status, utilizing a combination of pharmacological therapies, physical therapy, lifestyle modifications, and patient education.
  • Medication Management: Prescribe and manage medications commonly used in the treatment of rheumatic diseases, including nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs), biologic agents, corticosteroids, and analgesics, while monitoring for efficacy, side effects, and treatment compliance.
  • Intra-Articular Injections: Perform joint injections and aspirations for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes, administering corticosteroids or viscosupplementation agents to reduce inflammation, alleviate pain, and improve joint function in patients with arthritis or synovitis.
  • Patient Education: Educate patients and their families about their rheumatic conditions, treatment options, self-management strategies, joint protection techniques, and the importance of adherence to medication regimens, fostering empowerment and engagement in disease management.
  • Disease Monitoring: Monitor disease activity, progression, and treatment response in patients with chronic rheumatic diseases through regular clinical assessments, laboratory monitoring, imaging studies, and functional assessments, adjusting treatment plans as needed to optimize outcomes.
  • Multidisciplinary Collaboration: Collaborate with interdisciplinary healthcare teams, including primary care physicians, orthopedic surgeons, physical therapists, occupational therapists, radiologists, and pain management specialists, to provide comprehensive, coordinated care for patients with complex rheumatological conditions.
  • Clinical Research: Participate in clinical research studies, academic initiatives, and clinical trials investigating new treatments, medications, or interventions for rheumatic diseases, contributing to advancements in the field and improving patient care outcomes.
  • Community Outreach: Engage in community outreach programs, educational workshops, and public awareness campaigns to raise awareness about rheumatic diseases, promote early detection and intervention, and provide support and resources to individuals living with rheumatological conditions.

Qualifications:

  • Medical Degree: Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from an accredited medical school.
  • Residency Training: Completion of a residency program in Internal Medicine accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or equivalent training program.
  • Fellowship Training: Completion of a fellowship program in Rheumatology accredited by the ACGME or equivalent training program, focusing on the diagnosis and management of rheumatic diseases and autoimmune conditions.
  • Board Certification: Board certification or eligibility in Rheumatology by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) or equivalent certifying body, demonstrating proficiency and expertise in the practice of rheumatology.
  • State Licensure: Valid and unrestricted medical license to practice as a physician in the state of employment, complying with state licensing requirements and continuing medical education obligations.
  • Clinical Experience: Demonstrated clinical competence in evaluating and managing patients with a wide range of rheumatic diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, osteoarthritis, gout, ankylosing spondylitis, and vasculitis.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with patients, families, caregivers, and interdisciplinary healthcare teams, conveying complex medical information in a clear, empathetic, and culturally sensitive manner.
  • Problem-Solving Abilities: Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities to interpret diagnostic findings, formulate differential diagnoses, and develop evidence-based treatment plans tailored to individual patient needs, while considering comorbidities, treatment preferences, and prognostic factors.
  • Empathy and Compassion: Empathetic approach towards patients facing rheumatic diseases, with a genuine commitment to providing compassionate care, alleviating suffering, and supporting patients and families throughout the diagnostic and treatment process.
