Channahon District 17 Position Description
Position Title: Food Services Director
Reports to: Superintendent
Supervises: Site Managers, Cashiers, cooks, dishwashers, and cafeteria staff
Term of Employment: Ten Months (two weeks before school, two weeks after school)
Position Purpose: To provide the students and staff of the district with nutritious meals in an efficient, clean, friendly atmosphere. Directly responsible for the management of the day-to-day operations of school food service for all participating schools under the jurisdiction of the school food authority (SFA).
Essential Duties and Responsibilities (others may be assigned):
  • Develops Monthly Lunch and Snack Menus
  • Purchasing of food, supplies, and equipment
  • Places annual Government Commodity and Produce Order
  • Maintain food inventory control
  • Maintains all essential lunch program records/reports, in compliance with USDA and ISBE, necessary for program audits
  • Maintain nutritional information on database for government regulations on all meals
  • Assure each serving location has proper materials to perform the lunch functions
  • Maintains records of equipment in each location as well as their service records
  • Supervises and participates in preparation and serving of food, cleaning of kitchen and dining areas
  • Supervises proper receiving, serving, and storage of food in compliance with sanitation standards
  • Hires, trains, evaluates, and provides annual Professional Standards Training for all staff
  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs. safely
  • Monitors employee time cards and employee performance
  • Schedules substitute kitchen helpers as needed
  • Communicates with families regarding lunch balances
  • Coordinates annual Lunch Committee Planning Meeting
  • Attends 'Wellness Meetings' in fall and spring
  • Conducts surveys of students to identify meal preferences
  • Annually studies our program to eliminate waste (return tray, donations, choice)
  • Implements best practices based on latest research
  • Other duties as assigned

Education and Experience: High school diploma or equivalent. Three years or more of relevant food service experience. Demonstrated aptitude for assigned responsibilities. Such alternatives as the Board of Education determines as appropriate.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Certified in Food Service Sanitation. Certification of good health signed by a licensed physician. 12+ hours of annual food safety training required.

Language Skills: Ability to effectively work with other adults in a collaborative setting. Good teamwork is essential. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with adults, students, staff members, and vendors. Ability to be flexible and alter schedules, as necessary.

Evaluation: Employee is evaluated annually by the direct supervisor (Superintendent).
