Supervised by and/or Reports to: Building Administrator

General Responsibilities: Support the school's instructional program by coordinating and supervising school counseling activities which are designed to assist students in their personal, social, and intellectual development consistent with division and school goals.

Essential Duties:

* Plans and implements a comprehensive school counseling program with the school administration and counselors.
* Directs and coordinates all counseling activities to include coordination of other school counselors and support staff.
* Oversees the counseling department's maintenance of accurate student progress toward graduation and academic and career plan development.
* Coordinates and conducts activities that contribute to the effective operation of the school counseling program and school overall.
* Promotes and plans for continuous professional growth individually and for the school counseling department.
* Provides input to the principal regarding department personnel evaluations.
* Collaborates with the school testing coordinator to organize and direct the schools testing programs.
* Assists all students, individually or in groups, with developing academic, career and personal/social skills, goals, and plans.
* Interprets and utilizes student data accurately and appropriately for academic and career planning.
* Collaborates with parents/guardians, educators, and community agencies to assist students with educational, career, and life planning.
* Implements developmentally appropriate and prevention-oriented group activities to meet student needs and school goals.
* Consults and collaborates with parents/guardians, teachers, administrators, and other educational/community resources regarding students with identified concerns and needs.
* Implements an effective referral and follow-up process as needed.
* Uses assessment procedures accurately and appropriately for determining and structuring individual and group counseling services.
* Assists administrators with master scheduling, student course registration, course changes, and other scheduling related issues.
* Participates actively in school and student meetings and collaborates with other members of the staff in planning instructional goals, objectives, and methods.
* Conducts an annual program audit to review scope of program implementation and effectiveness.
* Coordinates the maintenance of student records as required by law, system policy, and administrative regulations; serves as a resource to other school personnel in the use and interpretation of records.
* Assumes a central role in leading data discussions with department and school staff.
* Collects and analyzes data to guide program direction and emphasis.
* Measures the results of the comprehensive school counseling program activities and shares results as appropriate with relevant stakeholders.
* Monitors student academic performance, behavior, and attendance and facilitates appropriate interventions.
* Performs other duties as may be assigned by the building administrator.

Requisite Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

* Must possess a thorough knowledge of current trends and best practices for providing a comprehensive school counseling program at the secondary level.
* Knowledge of counseling theories and skills, group dynamics and small group processes as well as the ASCA.
* Model the ability to provide leadership in the administration and supervision of a school counseling department.
* Able to motivate others to reach their fullest potential.
* In-depth knowledge of child development, group and individual counseling techniques, conflict resolution techniques, and community resources.
* Able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school administrators, parents, students, teachers, and staff.
* Able to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
* Experienced with the internet and computer programs.

Requisite Education and Experience:

* Must possess or be eligible for a valid Virginia Teaching License with a School Counselor endorsement.
* Must possess a Master's degree.
* Must have prior experience as a middle school counselor.
* Experience as a Director of Middle School Counseling preferred.

Physical Requirements:

Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to: a personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. Some climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, or repetitive motions required.
