This position is within the Remediation Division in the Office of Environmental Assessment.

This position is domiciled in East Baton Rouge Parish.

The incumbent will function as Team Leader on remediation sites assigned by the Geologist Supervisor. Responsibilities of Team Leader include serving as departmental contact and managing all subsurface assessment and remediation activities at assigned sites, activities include but are not limited to: Reviewing assessment and corrective action work plans and reports, analysis of hydrogeological interpretations and containment migration in the subsurface, inspecting assigned facilities, ensuring protection of human health and the environment, evaluating effectiveness of corrective actions, ensuring that all state and federal databases remain updated. Geological reviews often involve highly complex and controversial sites. Determine compliance with Department enforcement actions, settlement agreements, permits and cooperative agreements concerning subsurface assessment and corrective actions and other geological issues. Recommends and initiates actions necessary to ensure compliance with permits, policies, procedures and regulations regarding hydrogeological issues. Provide Geological support for permit reviews including ground water certifications and Solid and Hazardous Waste Permits at assigned facilities. This work will involve the review and preparation of geological cross sections, boring logs, potentiometric surface maps, groundwater monitoring reports and groundwater statistics in order to determine compliance with Department regulations and policies. Provide geological support on technical support teams on sites in which the incumbent is not assigned as team leader. Serve as lead worker mentoring other geologists in specific areas of expertise based upon work experience, training and background. Provides guidance, direction, instruction and training to staff members regarding concepts, methods, and techniques used in geological subsurface interpretations. Represent the Department and/or section at public hearings or meetings making presentations on remediation projects, geological permit conditions and other geological issues assigned by the Geologist Supervisor. Serve as a fact or expert witness during hearings, open forums and litigations representing the Department regarding geological and hydrogeological issues. Participates in conferences, training, and meetings with industry, public and other governmental agencies regarding hydrogeological issues.

There is a Special Entrance Rate (SER) for this position, as follows:

Geologist 1 - $22.57 per hour or $1805.60 biweekly

Geologist 2 - $25.84 per hour or $2067.20 biweekly

Geologist 3 - $29.59 per hour or $2367.20 biweekly

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

A baccalaureate degree with a major in geology, geosciences, earth and environmental science, geophysics, or geological engineering.

NOTE: Any college hours or degree must be from an accredited college or university.

 

Function of Work:

To perform routine and non-controversial geological evaluations concerning the identification, investigation, exploration, development, protection, and/or regulations of the state's natural resources.

Level of Work:

Entry.

Supervision Received:

Close from a Geologist Supervisor.

Supervision Exercised:

None; however, functional supervision may be exercised over lower level employees on a project basis (classified, unclassified and contractual).

Job Distinctions:

Differs from a Geologist 2 by the presence of entry-level tasks performance and receiving formal on-the-job training.Compiles and evaluates technical data (e.g., structure and isopach maps, cross-sections, base maps, well core data, production data, geophysical data, remote sensing imagery, hydrological maps, drilling activity reports, computer hydrology models, etc.) for geologic projects that are routine and non-controversial in nature such as statewide field investigations of reservoir potential, values of hydrocarbon and mineral deposits, coastal erosion and land loss, lignite deposits, waste disposal, floodplain hazards, and aquifer identification and characterization.

Prepares surface and subsurface maps of varying diversity and complexity on surface and subsurface strata, aquifers, coal and lignite seams, and other geological evaluations (e.g., fault plane maps, structure maps, facies maps, isopach maps and geological cross-sections).

Conducts preliminary evaluations and reviews of geological and technical data that are complex, but not controversial, utilized in monitoring statewide activity regarding mineral resources, injection wells, surface mining, oil and gas wells, coastal projects, water resources, and waste disposal.

Compiles and maintains data and information necessary to monitor and regulate industries related to geology (e.g., petroleum, surface mining, coastal/marine, resource assessment, and hydrological/environmental) and prepares recommendations for review to supervisor geologists.

Makes preliminary reviews of injection, surface mining, oil and gas, coastal use, waste disposal, and water resources permit applications and notifies superiors when deficiencies are detected.

Initiates corrective action by preparing interagency staff recommendations for final action by supervisory geologists. Manages the paperwork required to maintain a continuous surveillance of all wells (e.g., lignite, injection, oil an gas, and water resources) and development activities within a particular geographical area.

Reviews permit applications, completion reports, multiple completion reports, and examines and assigns development data to the proper field(s) within the geographical districts.

Disseminates geological data, agency activities, findings and recommendations to the general public, industry representatives, and other federal, state, and parish agencies.

Participates in fieldwork pertaining to all aspects of geology (e.g., petroleum, surface mining, coastal/marine, resource assessment, and/or hydrological/environmental) and assumes additional responsibilities as deemed necessary.
