The Catheterization Lab Clinician RN is an integral member of the catheterization lab team and demonstrates clinical expertise and advanced decision making skills, serves as a resource for peers, co-workers, and patients/families and assumes leadership responsibilities as necessary.

The Cath Lab Clinician RN is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and application of cardiac catheterization, interventional, and EP procedures, including but not limited to: Scrubbing diagnostic/interventional procedures; hemodynamic monitoring/analysis and documentation; imaging; physiologic monitoring, analysis, and documentation; circulating; anticoagulation and hematologic monitoring/analysis; blood gas and chemistry monitoring/analysis; administration of medications, administration of blood components; procedure assisting; inventory management and control; database entry; and any other duties as assigned.

The Cath Lab Clinician RN shall provide age-appropriate care to patients from the age of birth through 21 years, and select adult patients. Individuals must understand and follow physician, departmental, and Nationwide Children's Hospital policies and procedures, documentation required by ODH, Radiation Safety Officer, CLIA, CAP and JCAHO.

Responsibilities

1. Operates cardiac catheterization, EP, and intervention equipment as ordered by the physicians.

2. Administers drugs and blood products under the orders and supervision of a physician.

3. Set-up, calibrate and frequently checks the audio, video, physiologic, electrophysiologic, imaging, and electronic monitoring apparatus and draws blood samples for laboratory tests from the indwelling arterial catheter as appropriate.

4. Identifies and has extensive knowledge of the application and technical aspects of all equipment and supplies used in all diagnostic, EP, and interventional/cardiac procedures.

5. Operates, maintains, calibrates and documents all of the necessary laboratory equipment as specified by Point of Care Testing.

6. Performs chemistry, blood gas, co-oximetry, and activated clotting time in the Catheterization and EP Suites for patients undergoing related procedures.

7. Provides scrub assistance, assists with line insertion and intervention as the Cardiologist requests.

8. Applies necessary skills and monitoring to obtain hemostasis of vessels and application of appropriate dressings post procedure.

9. Coordinates, delegates and documents patient care in a knowledgeable, skillful and consistent manner.

10. Responsible for patient/family teaching of the procedure including discharge instructions and follow-up care.

11. Communicates in a positive manner with the patient and family members throughout the procedure.

12. Demonstrates advanced decision making skills in problem identification and resolution.

13. Participates in continuing educational programs with physicians and other health professionals in an effort to advance medical, catheterization and interventional, and EP technology.

14. Shall carry a beeper and share call with the other Catheterization and EP personnel and is able to respond to emergencies within 45 minutes of a page.

15. Demonstrates the ability to perform all functions required after hours in emergency procedures.

16. Provides in-service programs to hospital employees and maintains knowledge of current technology.

17. Keep records of procedures and departmental functions for efficient department operation including Pyxis and charge data collection, Infection Control activities and CLIA/CAP procedures.

18. Cleans, stocks, and maintains the labs during and after procedures.

19. Attends Heart Center in-services including weekly Cardiac Surgical, Catheterization, and QI conferences.

20. Participates in Patient Care Services and hospital activities including policy and procedure review and revision, committee attendance and participation, and patient/family advocacy.

21. Demonstrates professional growth through support of clinical research and data to respected educational sessions, support of colleagues' research and data collection, assistance with FDA sponsored clinical trials, and assistance with collection and development of QI/QA database information.

22. Maintains Continued Education Units (CEU)

23. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

1. Graduate of an approved (ACEN or CCNE accredited) school of nursing.

2. Licensed Registered Nurse, BSN required.

3. One year experience as a catheterization lab nurse and/or one year critical care experience is preferred.

4. Congenital heart disease experience preferred.

5. Basic Life Support required upon hire; PALS and ACLS certifications required within 4 months of employment and maintained throughout employment.

6. Must maintain necessary licensure/certification(s).

Minimum Physical Requirements:

Must be in good physical condition and mental health.

Must be able to push heavy equipment and move large boxes of disposable supplies.

Must be able to handle high levels of stress in emergency situations.

Must be able to stand for long periods of time.

Must be able to respond quickly to problem-solving situations while maintaining excellent interpersonal relations. Ability to visually and audibly perform all essential functions.

Precise finger and hand-eye coordination.
