Job Description

TITLE:

Communications Specialist

DEPARTMENT:

Communications/Community Relations

REPORTS TO:

Assistant Superintendent for Strategy and Engagement

OVERALL DESCRIPTION:

The Communications Specialist is responsible for developing and coordinating communication of District 203 information to the public-at-large and internally within District 203.

KEY COMPETENCIES:

* Understands and appreciates the need to keep self and other District leaders focused on the message and its goal


* Understands and appreciates how technology, including social media, can be used to communicate the District's message


* Manages District communications, news releases, online content, and announcements


* Able to seek out good District stories and is creative in helping to promote the value of District 203



ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

* Organize and create communications to increase awareness of District programs and initiatives, and to develop public interest and understanding through various media


* Organize and lead communication structures utilizing a variety of communications tools and platforms


* Key contact for and collaborate with the District's communications consultants as appropriate


* Serve as liaison to media, process school news, and prepare feature stories


* Prepare and distribute press releases as necessary


* Provide professional public communication to support the District leadership and the Board of Education


* Prepare and distribute all District-wide communications; serve as project manager for periodic reports to the community


* Serve as district webmaster and monitor/respond to website communications


* Develop Crisis Communication as necessary


* Supervise and guide school webmasters on developing best practices for effectively using the internet as a two-way communication tool


* Provide program support to the Community Relations Office - serving on special project committees, as well as coordinating photo and graphic design for various events and volunteer organizations


* Maintain open lines of communication with community organizations


* Other duties as assigned



QUALIFICATIONS:

* Minimum BA degree in communications/marketing/public relations/journalism or other related field; MA preferred


* Related work experience in communication field; previous school district communications/public relations preferred


* Strong written and verbal communication skills


* Ability to work with diverse stakeholder groups


* Ability to organize, prioritize, and work under time constraints

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. This position requires going to off-site locations and taking pictures with a camera which may require kneeling or crouching to a low position. Reliable transportation is required for purposes of traveling to and from schools and off-site events.

* Crisis or emergency situations may require holiday/weekend work


* Salary and fringe benefits established annually by the Board of Education



Starting Salary - $60,000 annually or higher commensurate with equivalent work experience
