Responsibilities:

Diagnosis and Treatment:
  • Conduct comprehensive evaluations of patients with kidney-related symptoms, including medical history, physical examination, and diagnostic tests such as blood tests, urine tests, and imaging studies.
  • Diagnose and manage a wide range of kidney disorders, including glomerulonephritis, nephrotic syndrome, diabetic nephropathy, polycystic kidney disease, and autoimmune kidney diseases.
  • Develop individualized treatment plans based on the specific needs and conditions of each patient, including medication management, dietary modifications, and lifestyle changes.

Chronic Kidney Disease Management:
  • Monitor and manage patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), including staging of CKD, assessment of kidney function, and management of complications such as hypertension, anemia, and mineral and bone disorders.
  • Provide education and support to patients with CKD regarding disease progression, treatment options, and strategies to slow the progression of kidney disease.

Dialysis and Transplantation:
  • Evaluate and manage patients requiring renal replacement therapy, including hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, and kidney transplantation.
  • Assess candidates for kidney transplantation, including pre-transplant evaluation, donor compatibility assessment, and post-transplant management and follow-up care.

Acute Kidney Injury Management:
  • Evaluate and manage patients with acute kidney injury (AKI), including identification of underlying causes, hemodynamic stabilization, and prevention of complications such as electrolyte abnormalities and fluid overload.

Electrolyte and Acid-Base Disorders:
  • Diagnose and manage electrolyte imbalances, acid-base disorders, and fluid abnormalities, including hyperkalemia, hyponatremia, metabolic acidosis, and alkalosis.

Hypertension Management:
  • Assess and manage patients with hypertension, including identification of secondary causes of hypertension related to kidney disease and implementation of antihypertensive therapy to achieve blood pressure control and prevent kidney damage.

Collaboration and Consultation:
  • Collaborate with other healthcare professionals, including primary care physicians, nephrology nurses, dietitians, and social workers, to provide comprehensive care to patients with kidney disease.
  • Provide consultation services to other healthcare providers regarding the management of complex kidney-related conditions and the interpretation of renal function tests and imaging studies.

Research and Education:
  • Participate in clinical research studies and academic activities to advance knowledge and improve outcomes in nephrology.
  • Educate medical students, residents, and fellows on the principles of nephrology, including the diagnosis, management, and treatment of kidney diseases.

Qualifications:

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from an accredited medical school.
  • Completion of an internal medicine residency program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or the American Osteopathic Association (AOA).
  • Completion of a nephrology fellowship program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or the American Osteopathic Association (AOA).
  • Board certification or eligibility for board certification in nephrology by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) or the American Osteopathic Board of Internal Medicine (AOBIM).
  • State medical licensure or eligibility for medical licensure to practice nephrology.
  • Strong clinical skills and proficiency in the diagnosis and management of kidney-related diseases and disorders.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for collaborating with patients, families, and healthcare colleagues.
  • Dedication to providing evidence-based, patient-centered care that prioritizes patient safety, satisfaction, and outcomes.
  • Commitment to lifelong learning and professional development in the field of nephrology, including participation in continuing medical education activities and professional organizations.
