Position Overview:

Accurately prepares IV, IVPB, Oncology Admixtures according to policy. Demonstrates competency in using automated dispensing cabinet (Omnicell & Pyxis). Demonstrates the ability to use the Pharmacy profiling system, hospital EHR and HBOC systems. Accurately processes and dispenses individual medication orders. Handles controlled substances in accordance with New Jersey and Federal Laws. Performs purchasing functions. Performs technical and supportive duties for the Pharmacy as related to IV therapy.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education:High school diploma or equivalency. Some college education and/or IT knowledge or course work preferred. Must possess current pharmacy technician certification (CPhT) and NJ Board of Pharmacy registration. National IV certification or must attain within six months upon hire date.

Experience:Three years' Pharmacy Technician experience, including one year hospital pharmacy Technician experience.

Other Credentials:

Knowledge and Skills:Excellent leadership and customer relations skills. Extensive knowledge of drugs (brand and generic), purchasing and general computer software program. Must be competent in all types of IV preparations. Knowledge of Federal and New Jersey state laws governing IV compounding requirements.

Special Training:Basic computer and mathematical skills are required.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

Does this position formally supervise employees? No

If set to YES, then this position has the authority (delegated) to hire, terminate, discipline, promote or effectively recommend such to manager.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

* Possesses comprehensive knowledge of USP 795, USP 797 and USP 800 requirements in IV preparations. Demonstrates the ability to aseptically prepare IVPB, syringes, large volume IV, ADD-Vantage and Add-A-Vial preparations.


* Demonstrates knowledge of USP requirements for sterile and non-sterile hazardous drugs preparation and the environment including Primary and Secondary engineering control, personal protective equipment (PPE) used and the annual media fill test.


* Demonstrates the knowledge of chemotherapeutic agents and be able to prepare these meds for patients under supervision of a pharmacist. Performs basic calculation for appropriate dose based on criteria.


* Demonstrates knowledge and ensures compliance with the laws/rules/regulations governing the labeling of IV vials, syringes, compounded IV products including concentration, beyond-use-dating, storage requirements and initials.


* Uses automated dispensing cabinets, both Pyxis and Omnicell. Accurately fills and refills IV and drugs, loading and unloading including meds in patient specific bins.


* Troubleshoots and resolves problems with patient IV and oncology meds.


* Accesses patient profiles and retrieve ADT information.


* Accurately fills medication orders, chemo and non-chemo, in a timely manner


* Delivers controlled substances in accordance with hospital policy. Maintains required paperwork. Reports any irregularities (discrepancies, etc.) to a pharmacist in a timely manner.


* Orders medications from wholesaler when applicable. Ensures order is checked-in and put away in a timely manner with proper PPE, especially those requiring refrigeration or special handling.


* Assists in reviewing product expiration dates as evidenced by lack of expired medications in the active stock area. Assists in returning medications to stock and credits patients appropriately as evidenced by observation of a pharmacist. Stocks all areas accurately, as evidenced by lack of errors. Accurately and promptly fills floor stock requisitions and stock for off site locations.


* Performs other duties as assigned and possesses a willingness to adapt to changing department demands.

Continuous physical demands include: Talk or Hear

Lifting Floor to Waist 25 lbs. Lifting Waist Level and Above 10 lbs.

Sensory Requirements include: Accurate Near Vision, Accurate Far Vision, Moderate Depth Perception, Moderate Hearing

Anticipated Occupational Exposure Risks Include the following: Chemical , Dust/Particulate Matter
