Position: School Psychologist
Reports to: Director of Special Education
Contract: 208 days

I. General Responsibilities

The School Psychologist is a professional trained to assist the school in improving the achievement and adjustment of children, including those with physical, educational, emotional, and mental disabilities, as well as those with exceptional talents or giftedness. As a member of the educational team, he/she is a major resource and support person to school staff in the development of an environment responsive to the needs of children, which focuses on prevention as well as intervention designed to maximize the development of each child's potential.

School psychological services are provided in a coordinated, organized fashion and are delivered in a manner that ensures the provision of a comprehensive and seamless continuum of services. School Psychologists demonstrate their knowledge of schools as systems when they work with individuals and groups to facilitate structure and policies that create and maintain schools which are safe, caring, and inviting places for all persons in the system.

II. Examples of Duties

The School Psychologist facilitates collaboration of building teams in implementing the General Education Intervention (GEI) process to (a) identify academic and behavior problems, (b) collect and analyze information to understand the problems, (c) make decisions about service delivery, and (d) evaluate the outcomes of the service delivery. In consultation with the school psychologist, building principals and special education administrators will determine the particular duties in each building.

Special education administrators and school psychologists provide oversight to assure student and program evaluation services are implemented within the parameters of IDEA-04. The Director assigns the duties of compliance activities to the administrator and school psychologist serving each building. These vary from year to year depending on current regulations and compliance audit guidelines.

III. Other Practices May Include

Offering Mental Health Services - The School psychologist can work directly with student and family mental health needs. They may promote wellness and prevention programs. The psychologist may serve on crisis intervention teams. The psychologist may provide group and individual counseling services.

Provide Training - The School Psychologist can provide assistance to parents and staff by offering training in effective instruction and management techniques. The psychologist can model appropriate approaches in differentiating curriculum for both remedial and extended study.

Assisting Research - The School Psychologist can assist schools with action research as they (a) utilize current professional literature on various aspects of education and child development, (b) translate research into practice, and 9c) use research design and statistics skills to conduct investigations to develop and facilitate effective services.

Providing Leadership - The School Psychologist can provide leadership by assisting in program evaluation, serving on district-wide committees; facilitating systems change activities, and providing leadership for change.

Resolving Conflicts - The School Psychologist can serve as a consultant to assist in conflict resolution and can provide mediation direct services and/or training.
