In this Principal Software Engineer role, you will drive the strategic direction and hands-on execution for VS Code and Copilot, shaping the developer experience at scale. You’ll work across MS and GitHub teams to tackle architectural bottlenecks and define APIs that unlock new capabilities while preserving compatibility. You’ll prototype and validate approaches, set product and platform direction, and mentor engineers to build high-impact, extensible software. This is a chance to lead cross-team initiatives that improve performance, accessibility, and developer control.
Responsibilities
- Identify significant product opportunities and systemic engineering problems; set technical direction balancing near-term delivery with long-term health.
- Prove approaches via prototypes, implementation, testing, and debugging to guide architectural decisions.
- Lead cross-team delivery across Microsoft and GitHub, clarifying ownership and API boundaries to enable autonomous team delivery.
- Own outcomes beyond releases using adoption signals, quality metrics, evaluations, experiments, and user feedback.
- Improve engineering effectiveness through testing strategies, performance work, shared design patterns, and rapid experimentation tools.
- Lead technical discussions in the open, investigate community issues, and collaborate with developers and extension authors to shape designs.

Key requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related field and 6+ years of software engineering experience with JavaScript, TypeScript, or Rust or equivalent.
