Assists the surgical team by acting as the primary scrub person who handles instruments, supplies and equipment during surgical procedures. The Specialty Resource Surgical Technologist is a certified technician who, because of advanced education and in-depth clinical experience, demonstrates proficiency in a defined practice area. This individual is highly motivated and self-directed and requires minimal supervision in accomplishing his/her duties and responsibilities. He/she actively contributes to the knowledge and growth of self and others and can assume more responsibilities outside of his/her area of expertise. Essential duties include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
*MAJOR ACCOUNTABILITIES/CRITICAL RESPONSIBILITIES*
* Accountable for the delivery of quality patient care in the operating room.
* Assists with the transportation of patients to and from the O.R. as needed
* Respects and protects the patient’s rights to confidentiality and privacy and discloses information only for professional purposes which are in the patient’s best interests with full consideration of their legal rights.
* Actively participates in universal protocol process. Provides safe patient care by verifying patient’s identification and assuring the presence of the necessary instrumentation, supplies, equipment, and implants.
* Demonstrates advanced skills in the use of all equipment to support primary service
* Provides advanced surgical scrub services in primary services
* Anticipates emergency or unusual circumstances and initiates corrective actions according to established protocols.
* Anticipates the need of the surgeon to expedite the surgical procedure.
* Assumes responsibility for accurate sponge, sharp and instrument counts, correct medication labeling on the sterile field and correct handling and labeling of specimens.
* Assists with the preparation of equipment and supplies required for the surgical procedure.
* Plans for and coordinates supplies and equipment for intra operative use.
* Adheres to practices to protect patients from injury, related to chemical injury, wound contamination, SSI, Infection, extraneous objects, and positioning.
* Demonstrates proficiency when selecting instruments for all types of surgery.
* Checks case carts for required supplies and selects necessary items as needed for assigned surgery.
* Demonstrates knowledge of the storage of specialty equipment by the ability to locate such when necessary.
* Maintains and enforces highest standard of sterile technique and safe environment during operative procedure.
* Performs periodic counts of needles, sponges, and equipment during the surgical procedure and initiates corrective action with the circulating nurse in accordance with the center’s policies and procedures when counts are incorrect.
* Demonstrates knowledge of sterilization and instrument processing.
* Support and assist in the Sterile Processing Department as needed.
* Always maintains patient’s privacy and confidentiality according to the center’s standards.
* Acts as a patient advocate and assures that the patient's Bill of Rights is followed.
* Formulates and maintains effective working relationships with peer, managers, and other surgical team members.
* Completes required continuous training and education, including department specific requirements.
*EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:*
* Graduate from certified technician program preferred
* Minimum 2 years previous orthopedic experience in a hospital or ambulatory surgical center setting preferred
* Participates in continuing education program which pertains directly to surgical technology
*ACCOUNTABILITY:*

* Uses effective communication skills to create a culture of collaboration and respect.
* Accepts suggestions and feedback from others.

*SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMAND:*
* May be exposure to infectious diseases. Standing/walking for more than half of the day.
* Frequently bending, reaching, pushing, pulling, twisting, and lifting.Must be able to assist pushing/pulling/lifting patients ranging from five (5) to three hundred (300) pounds.
