1) Maintains a professional appearance and conducts self in a mature and professional manner during tour of duty. Directly supervises professional and paraprofessional nursing personnel on assigned shifts. The Charge Nurse will provide direction and monitoring of Medication Aides as they administer both routine and prn medications and while performing other activities for which they have been trained and their competency established. The Medication Aides will seek direction from the Charge Nurse on duty prior to administering prn medications.
Expectation: Observers staff interaction and behavior with residents and peers. Reports and documents data needed for job performance evaluations, disciplinary action, or termination. Monitors for inappropriate behavior and unsafe practices as needed. Provides effective interventions as needed. Provides leadership and guidance to nursing personnel as needed. Ensures sufficient staffing and deployment of staff in sufficient numbers following assignment sheets per policy and procedure. The Charge Nurse will assign staff per assignment sheets and will be responsible for overseeing that tasks are completed and assigned.
2) Administers nursing service activities on assigned shift.
Expectation: Completes assigned clinical duties on shift including assessments, treatments, and procedures and documentation as needed for resident care. Actively participates in implementation and evaluation of the comprehensive plan. Gives and receives report in a timely yet thorough manner. Keeps family aware of residents status and change in condition. Maintains good public relations with community members. Family members and physicians will be notified per facility policy of illnesses, injury, or other changes in condition or plan of care.
3) Completes job performance counseling, and follows progressive disciplinary actions per facility policy and procedure on subordinate employees when necessary to ensure quality of care to residents.
Expectation: Completes all documentation as needed in compliance with policies and procedures. Recognizes the need for staff coaching, teaching, and follow up on problem areas related to quality and continuity of care. The Charge Nurse is expected to function as the team leader to direct care staff at all times. All areas of concern must be reported to the Director of Nursing, Assistant Director of Nursing in a timely manner after occurrences. If the Charge Nurse is unsure of how to proceed with disciplinary procedures in any given situation it is expected that they will ask for guidance.
4) Assists in teaching and training subordinates in nursing care.
Expectation: Maintains responsibility for assigning the orientation of new staff. Relays information from Charge Nurse Meetings, memos, policy changes, etc. and observes employees activities for adherence to changes. Provide teaching as needed on an ongoing basis.
5) Consults and reports to Physicians, Pharmacy, Laboratory, and other consulting departments in coordination resident care.
Expectation: Maintains responsibility for coordination of all aspects of resident care through shift.
6) Resolves resident and employee conflicts as well as difficult personnel related problems.
Expectation: Must investigate all problems appropriately utilizing problem solving techniques to provide appropriate intervention. Most often problems should be dealt with at the time of occurrence whenever possible.
7) Will follow polices and procedures as outlined in employee handbook and Nursing Policy and Procedure Book. Must participate in and be supportive of facility Quality Assurance Activities and studies to ensure quality of care.
Expectation: Will comply with internal policy and procedures as pertains to the Charge Nurse position as well as maintaining compliance with state and federal regulations.
8) Performs nursing tasks as needed.
Expectations: Accurately dispenses and administers medications, treatments and nursing procedures as ordered by the physicians. Assists nurses and direct care staff with care needs as necessary to meet physical, mental, and psychosocial needs of residents at all times.
