Veterinary Assistant/Technician

We are located in a suburban area near parks and restaurants, and have a good loyal client base. Our hospital is well-equipped with digital radiography, ultrasound, digital dental radiography, and a full in-house lab. We also offer alternative veterinary care, such as acupuncture, laser therapy, and Chinese medicine. We strongly emphasize fear free handling of our patients for the well-being and safety of the pets and staff.
The ideal candidate is an experienced, attentive, and dedicated team player with excellent communication skills to engage with and educate clients and their furry companions. Candidates should have general knowledge of the day to day hospital flow and protocol, medications, how to run lab work/tests, blood draws and vaccine administration. While educational credentials are very important, we place great value on having basic tech skills, the ability to think on one’s feet, reliability, and multi-tasking and organizational skills.
Duties:
- Obtaining vitals and assisting veterinarians during examinations and procedures
- Administer medications, vaccines, and treatments as directed by the veterinarian
- Prepare animals for and assist through surgical and dental procedures, including prepping rooms, monitoring pets under anesthesia, and post-op care and recovery
- Perform daily laboratory tests, such as bloodwork, ear cytology, and urinalysis, and record results accurately
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of exam rooms, treatment areas, and kennels
- Process and refill prescriptions
- Assist with radiographs and other diagnostic imaging procedures
- Maintain a stocked hospital and inventory of supplies, vaccines, and medications
Requirements:
- Previous experience working with and handling animals; knowledge of body language
- Surgical and dental preparation and anesthesia monitoring
- Nursing care and treatment skills, including IV catheter placement, blood draw, blood pressure with doppler, and medical calculations
- Familiarity with veterinary terminology, pharmacology, and procedures
- Ability to follow instructions and work effectively as part of a team
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written
- Excellent attention to detail and ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to lift up to 50lbs and be on one's feet for 8 hours
