RESPONSIBILITIES

As an Army Chaplain, your responsibilities might be to:

  • Conduct worship services in a variety of settings
  • Perform religious rites and ceremonies such as weddings, funeral services and baptisms
  • Counsel Soldiers who seek guidance
  • Oversee religious education programs, such as Sunday school and youth groups
  • Visit and provide spiritual guidance and care to hospitalized personnel and their family members
  • Advise leaders at all levels regarding morale, ethics and spiritual well-being

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
  • U.S. citizen or equivalent
  • Graduate degree in theological or related studies from an accredited educational institution
  • Have two years of full-time religious leadership experience
  • Must be able to obtain an Ecclesiastical Endorsement from a religious faith organization registered with the Department of Defense

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Army Chaplains work in a variety of environments, including offices, hospitals, places of worship, and combat zones.
Offices
Chaplains may work in offices, especially when assigned to community ministries.
Hospitals
Chaplains may work in medical facilities, correctional facilities, or combat hospitals.
Places of worship
Chaplains may officiate at worship services, funerals. memorials and other military functions
Combat zones
Chaplains may work in combat zones. either within Army-established bases or with Soldiers on the battlefield. They play a key role in stress management before, during, and after combat, but they don't participate in armed combat and can't carry weapons in the field. If captured by opposing forces, Chaplains are protected by the Geneva Convention and must be returned unharmed to their home country.
