R&D Maintenance Services, Inc. provides operations and maintenance services on U.S Army Corps of Engineers projects throughout the southeast - since 1980. We are the Operations and Maintenance Contractor for the Black Warrior – Tombigbee Waterway Project providing machinery and facility maintenance and repair on several hundred miles of waterway and 9 locks/dams/spillways on the system. The maintenance compound in Tuscaloosa is equipped with modern facilities including a machine shop to support the waterway operations. R&D is an EEO Employer.
GENERAL DESCRIPTIONThe Machinist - Maintenance operates a wide range of manual and automatic machine tools as well hand and power tools, both in both the Tuscaloosa shop and in the field at USACE waterway facilities (locks, dams, spillways, etc.) Performs machine set-up, tooling selection, machine operation, measurement and dimensional inspection, component assembly and dis-assembly, field removal and installation, etc. Works from drawings, specifications, job layouts, field measurements, and written and/or oral instructions to meet machining requirements. Works both individually and as part of a maintenance team. Understands and applies machining and repair techniques; work quickly and skillfully with hands to fit and assemble parts/components, to fabricate and/or repair components and mechanical assemblies, and build fixtures and jigs needed to perform tasks.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Perform set up and operation of a wide variety of machine tools for complex machining and fitting of all kinds of parts, tools, and mechanical/hydraulic components to complete shop- and site-based work and repairs.
- Performs repairs or modifications of equipment as applicable in the shop and in the field.
- Operates a variety of tools such as grinders, mills, drill presses, lathes, etc., including manual and CNC.
- Lay out work from blueprints, field/shop measurements, sketches, and written specifications. Must have good understanding of shop math skills.
- Organizational ability and confidence to work independently and a team environment.
- Assists with site visits and job planning. Assists Project Manager or Superintendent as it relates to work scope for repair/fabrication operations.
- Ensures tooling performs as designed and parts are within specifications and tolerances per requirements.
- Participates in the R&D Safety and Quality Control Programs and upholds the R&D safety and quality requirements.
- Demonstrates dependability in attendance, work completion, and flexibility to meet business needs. Performs other duties as assigned.
- Operation of fixed and portable machining equipment to complete tasks (mills, boring bars, lathes, welders, line boring and bore welding, etc.)
- Performs work safely and meets regulatory compliance with company policies and regulatory requirements
- Must fully understand and be able to successfully use micrometers I.D, O.D., Depth Mics, Snap gauges, Tapes, Indicators, etc.
- Have strong mechanical aptitude, and ability to read drawings, reference manuals, and assembly instruction guides.
- Planning and organizing skills to effectively prioritize and plan work activities; uses time efficiently; plans for additional resources; analyze and solve problems; make decisions; concentrate amid distractions; exercise good judgment; organized with attention to detail and accuracy; use math and perform calculations; work with minimal errors; perform well under pressure; adapt well to change.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing
- Ability to operate overhead cranes and forklift, and obtain required certifications/licenses
- Ability to operate hand tools, power tools, pneumatic tools, and equipment used in mechanical repair
- Physical requirements: bend; crouch; fine manipulation (working with fingers); grasp; gross manipulation (working with hands); hold; kneel; lift and/or carry up 20-50 pounds; pull; push; reach at or below shoulder level; reach overhead; sit; stand; squat; stoop; stretch; twist; and walk; The ability to make precisely coordinated movements of the fingers of one or both hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects. Appropriate visual acuity and hearing.
- Five years of verifiable work experience as a machinist that demonstrates the set up and use of lathes, milling machines, drill presses, and precision grinding in a maintenance setting. Ten years preferred.
- A minimum of two years documented work experience with field measurement; field machining; line boring; and CNC machines.
- High school diploma or equivalent required. Additional technical education in related field preferred.
- Welding experience preferred.
- Required to successfully complete background check, MVR, and drug/alcohol screenings.
- Some field travel and occasional overtime. Occasional overnight stays.
