Warehouse Equipment Operator (Shop Lead)

This position will be based out of our equipment shop in Muskegan, MI and is responsible for performing various job tasks related to the maintenance and transport of heavy equipment and other materials. This shop supports various hazardous and non-hazardous waste land-based remediation and water based dredging sites.  
  • Heavy equipment operation is a skilled trade that involves the operation of material handlers, excavators, wheeled loaders, etc., as required to load/offload material barges, float plants, and alike. Repair and maintenance of equipment may be an additional frequent duty.  Job tasks involve manual labor and performing activities in various weather conditions. 
  • Quality fleet of heavy equipment.
  • Good long-term employment prospects.
  • Ability to run heavy equipment, including wheeled loaders, telehandlers, excavators and more required.
  • Ability to load and unload heavy equipment from transport vehicles and maneuver safely around the lay down yard.
  • Fabrication and welding experience a plus.

  • Schedule Monday thru Saturday with occasional Sunday work.

Full Time  Pay:  $28.00 - $32.00/ per hour plus overtime per state law plus travel pay and per diem pay as applicable. Local: This position will be assigned to a local shop in Muskegan, MI.  To be considered for future projects, candidates must be open to sustained project-based travel within the US. Project locations will vary depending on the assignment. Essential Job Functions:
Specific duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Excavate, move, grade, compact contaminated or non-contaminated earth. 
  • Excavate contaminated or non-contaminated sediment material.
  • Empty, fill, manage material handling barges.
  • Demolition of various structures including, but not limited to buildings, aboveground storage tanks, underground pipelines, etc.
  • Read and understand underground utility markings, avoid mechanical excavation within tolerance zones created by markings and maintain safe distances from overhead and underground utilities.
  • Mix reagents with contaminated sediments, soil, and hazardous waste.
  •  Move to Qualifications.
  • Cut and fill grades per designs and specifications.
  • Load materials into trucks for removal from project site.
  • Load and unloading trucks for onsite transporting of materials.
  • Perform daily inspection and maintenance on assigned pieces of construction equipment including greasing and oiling.
  • Move various materials, laying pipe, backfilling pipe.
  • Load and unloading equipment from trailers.
  • Lift and setting heavy loads.
  • Assist with the preparation and review of Job Safety Analyses, observations, and other reports.
  • Manage stockpiles of incoming materials.
  • Maintain a clean work environment clean of any significant drips, spills or other releases of potentially contaminated materials.
  • Accurate placement of backfill / capping materials either on land or in water.
  • Promote the use of Stop Work Authority.
  •  Work independently as well as part of a team.
  •   Meet deadlines and contribute to a positive, safe, high-quality culture in a fast-paced environment.

Physical and Visual Activities Required:

Physical Demands:
Physical demands commonly associated with the performance of the functions of this job include:
  • Sitting for long periods of time in moving, vibrating, jerking, or stationary machinery. 
  • Using installed equipment ladder, steps, and handholds maintaining 3 points of contact to climb in and out of machinery on regular basis.
  • Possibility of frequent and prolonged use of respiratory equipment (i.e. half-face, full-face, SCBA, etc.)
  • Repetitive motion from operating hand and foot controls of the equipment.
  • Hand cleaning tracks and undercarriages with small tools after working in wet and sloppy conditions. 
  • Expected to lift objects weight 1 to 25 lbs. on a regular basis and may be required to lift objects weighing up to 50 lbs. 
  • Working in loud or noisy environments.
Environmental/Atmospheric Conditions:
Environmental and atmospheric conditions commonly associated with the performance of the functions of this job include:
  • Outside construction site. 
  • Terrain is rugged and may be difficult to navigate. 
  • Dusty and windy atmospheres.
  • Confined spaces.
  • Potential airborne exposures to dusts, mists, fumes, and vapors in concentrations not exceeding OSHA Permissible Exposure Limits (PELS) or other published occupational exposure limits.  
Personal Protective Equipment:
Different types of personal protective equipment (PPE) may be worn including, but not limited to hard hat, hearing protection such as ear plugs or muffs, eye protection such as safety glasses, goggles, face shield, etc., welders helmet, safety vest, various types of gloves including leather, Nitrile, latex, etc., steel toe boots, and various respiratory protection such as dust masks, half face and full face respirators, SCBAs, PAPRs, etc. may be required depending on site conditions.  Personal floatation devices (PFD’s), life jackets, protective coveralls including cotton, Tyvek, fire retardant, chemical protective, etc.

Qualifications:
Knowledge: Must possess and demonstrate skills to safely operate heavy equipment and be knowledgeable of their uses and limitations. Ability to read and understand construction specifications, construction plans, and operating procedures.Experience: 3-5 years of experience in operating heavy equipment, preferably in environmental remediation projects. GPS experience is a plus.
Education:  HS Diploma or equivalent
Machines, Tools, Equipment Used:   Material handlers, rubber-tire or track heavy equipment such as backhoes, loaders, dozers, and excavators; tractors, articulated dump trucks, motor graders, scrapers, pumps, dewatering systems, pugmills, batch plants, dredges, crushers, screens, etc.  Hand tools and power tools.
Licenses/Certifications: HAZWOPER 40-hour training and current 8-hour refresher required.Valid state drivers license is required, CDL is a plus.
