Mecklenburg County’s School Health Program supports the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School system. What is School Nursing? School Nursing is a specialized practice of nursing that protects and promotes student health, facilitates optimal development, and advances academic success. School Nurses are grounded in ethical and evidence-based practice, are the leaders who bridge health care and education, provide care coordination, advocate for quality student-centered care, and collaborate to design systems that allow individuals and communities to develop their full potential. Position Summary:
The Mecklenburg County Public Health (MCPH) School Nurses provide preventive health services to facilitate students’ optimal physical, mental, emotional, and social growth and development. The Registered Nurses work in the school setting to strengthen and facilitate the educational process by improving and protecting the health status of children. A current license to practice as a Registered Nurse (RN) in North Carolina and current North Carolina or South Carolina driver’s license is required. The Mecklenburg County Public Health (MCPH) School Health Program provides general nursing services for students enrolled in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS). MCPH employees are required to receive annual immunization against the flu unless a medical or religious exemption applies. Other immunizations may also be required unless a medical or religious exemption applies. MCPH school nurses follow the Mecklenburg County vacation, holiday, and inclement weather schedules, which may differ from the CMS schedule. MCPH employees are expected to respond during emergent public health events and certain planned public health events. The events may or may not involve school-aged children and youth.

Position Specific Information:
Please note: This is a Full-Time permanent 10-month position. What that means is you will be working for 10 months of the year, August to June, and be off on a summer break for eight (8) weeks over the summer. During this time, you will not be receiving pay since you are not working. However, your benefits do continue during this time. During the 10 months that you are working you will be paying a prorated amount to cover the cost of your benefits during the summer months that you are not working.
This position will offer up to a $10,000.00 sign-on bonus
Essential Functions:
- Ensure compliance with agency policies, procedures, and protocols, as well as Board of Nursing laws, rules, and standards.
- Perform specific health care procedures and/or treatments under standing orders or orders from the student’s health care provider.
- Administer daily and PRN (as needed) medications and nursing care procedures prescribed by the student's physician; train unlicensed assistive personnel to perform delegable tasks for instances when the nurse is absent or not available.
- Initiate’s emergency procedures for students and staff as needed.
- Develop emergency action plans (EAP’s) and individual health plans (IHP’s)
- Provide consultation to school teams to assure that medical accommodations are made to support optimal learning (e.g., IEP and Section 504 teams).
- Orient the school staff and teaches specific medical procedures for students who may have special health care needs that must be addressed in the classroom.
- Assess compliance with immunization laws; participate in special immunization clinics provide by Mecklenburg County Public Health; may be assigned to administer immunizations during the clinics.
- Assume responsibility for appropriate assessment, planning, intervention, evaluation, management, and referral related to student health conditions that occur or become evident at school.
- Provide health counseling/classes and education to students, parents, school staff, and others on nutrition, disease prevention, chronic diseases, healthy lifestyles, and health promotion topics to facilitate responsible decision-making.
- Document health services per Program policy using an electronic health record system.
- Present, train, and maintain appropriate standards from OSHA regarding contact with, and possible exposure to bloodborne pathogens and other potentially infectious body materials within the school or employment setting.
- Provide health education and anticipatory counseling.
- Follow procedures for suspected cases of child abuse and neglect.
- Act as a liaison between the school, home, public health professionals, health care providers, and other community agencies.
- Coordinate presentations by various agencies and professionals on pertinent health care topics as requested by school staff.
- Maintain school health office equipment and assesses/maintains stock of consumable supplies.
Mecklenburg County Health Department employees: Respond in cases of urgent and/or emergent events that require public health interventions. Employees may be trained for and assigned duties unrelated to their regular work; work outside normal business hours and workdays and/or in a different work location may be required. Emergency events include, but are not limited to, communicable disease outbreaks, severe weather situations (e.g., snow or ice storms, tornados, hurricanes), natural disasters (e.g., earthquakes), fire, or power outages, and acts of terrorism.
Minimum Qualifications:
Experience:
- Minimum of 2 years of nursing experience, preferably in child health, school health, public health, home health, or emergency nursing.
- Candidate must have active nursing experience within the last 5 years.
- Bachelor’s Degree or higher in nursing from an accredited college.
- If a higher degree in Nursing was conferred without a BSN, employment may be possible with the stipulation the incumbent successfully completes course work and exams for Principles and Practices of Public Health Nursing within a year.

Licenses and Certifications:
- Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse (RN) in NC issued by the NC Board of Nursing or another Nurse Licensure Compact State.
- Certification in Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (CPR & AED) by the American Heart Association that is valid for at least 90 days after hire. Maintenance of this certification is required and as funds are available may be supported as part of employment.
- National certification in school nursing required within 3 years of hire date. Maintenance of this certification is required.
- May require valid NC or SC driver's license.
- May require the ability to obtain and maintain a Mecklenburg County Operator's Permit (COP).
- Annual Mecklenburg County Human Resource background screening
Preferred Qualifications:
- Work experience as a Registered Nurse (RN) within the last five years
- Valid North Carolina or South Carolina driver’s license. Personal vehicle for use at work or the ability to arrange appropriate transportation is required. Upon hire, the applicant must meet qualifications for a Mecklenburg County Operator’s Permit – Safety Sensitive.
