A Brief Overview

Performs specific technical duties related to Electroencephalography.

What you will do

  • Identify patients using the patient wristband and written requisition.
  • Verbally explains the procedure to the patient prior to beginning the procedure. LTM hookups require patient consent or administrative consent before a hookup can be started. Obtain pertinent history noting any contraindications to activation procedures.
  • Protect patient privacy by applying appropriate draping, closing curtains and closing room doors.
  • Perform EEG/LTM hookups by measuring the patient's head in accordance with the 10/20 System of measurement. LTM hookups are glued with the use of collodion.
  • All EEG’s are run in accordance with Departmental guidelines.
  • Proper and consistent documentation of changes seen in the EEG to include wake cycle, drowsy, sleep, any abnormal patterns, activation procedures and patient cooperation
  • Record written testing data in Departmental Record Books.
  • Monitors LTM patients and completely documents any changes seen on the EEG appropriately both on the actual recording and in the patients technical chart.
  • Must know when critical changes are seen on patients EEG/LTM recordings, the nurse (if inpatient) and Neurologist must be immediately notified.
  • If a patient has a seizure or becomes unresponsive in the Department a Rapid Response/Emergency Response Team must be called immediately.
  • All EEG techs are required to perform infant hearing screens and work in conjunction with the Labor and Delivery Department..
  • The Neurophysiology Department is a 24/7 operation. All techs are required to work various shifts including days, evenings, overnights, holidays and weekends.
  • All requests for time off must be approved by the Departmental Coordinator in advance.
  • All techs are required to take some days of call each month.
  • Verbally report equipment malfunction to Neurophysiology Coordinator.
  • Observe strict patient confidentiality regarding written records and test reports.
  • Maintain EEG equipment in clean working order.
  • Maintains an orderly, safe and clear working environment.
  • Assists with training of new personnel when applicable.
  • Perform any related duties as assigned.

Education Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma Or equivalent in experience Required.

Experience Qualifications:

  • Prior hospital experience Preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Attention to detail; focus.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • EEG registry Upon Hire Preferred.
