GENERAL FUNCTION: Fabricates, assembles, installs, or repairs furnishings in ships or boats according to blueprints, using hand tools, power tools, and measuring instruments. 

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed and are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all responsibilities

  • Reads blueprints to determine dimensions of furnishings in ships or boats.  
  • Shapes and laminates wood to form parts of ship, using steam chambers, clamps, glue, and jigs.
  • Assembles and installs hardware, gaskets, floors, furnishings, or insulation, using adhesive, hand tools, and power tools. 
  • Repairs structural woodwork and replaces defective parts and equipment, using hand tools and power tools. 
  • Cuts wood or glass to specified dimensions, using hand tools and power tools.  
  • Constructs floors, doors, and partitions, using woodworking machines, hand tools, and power tools. Shapes irregular parts and trims excess material from bulkhead and furnishings to ensure fit meets specifications. 
  • Transfers dimensions or measurements of wood parts or bulkhead on plywood, using measuring instruments and marking devices. Greases gears and other moving parts of machines on ship.
 

DESIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of materials, methods, and the appropriate tools to construct objects, structures, and buildings. 
  • Finding ways to structure or classify multiple pieces of information. 
  • Using mathematics to solve problems, installing equipment, machines, wiring, or programs to meet specifications, identifying the nature of problems. 
  • The ability to quickly make coordinated movements of one hand, a hand together with its arm, or two hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects.
EXPERIENCE & TRAINING: High School diploma or GED required. Two or more years’ experience in both joiner/carpenter and HVAC work. Knowledge of fabrication using sheet metal and/or equivalent combination of experience and training which results in the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job.
