Position: Part-time Group Leader at SONYC After School at Harbor Heights Middle School POSITION OVERVIEW:Group leaders are responsible for academic tutoring and assisting lead instructors in preparing students to demonstrate newly acquired skills in STEM, leadership, sports and the arts. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Organize, lead, and promote the students’ interest and participation in the activities offered by the program.
- Foster an atmosphere of fun and learning, and serve as a role model to students, always professionally conducting yourself and maintaining appropriate boundaries.
- Establish and enforce rules for behavior, and procedures for maintaining order among the students.
- Provide academic support, homework guidance, assistance, and supervision to students.
- Promote positive character development.
- Maintain effective classroom management that encourages full participation and student growth.
- Supervise groups of students while maintaining their physical and emotional safety and health.
- Closely coordinate with Program Director and coworkers for any programmatic changes or any other issues or concerns.
- Participate in staff meetings, program evaluations, program improvement, and professional development sessions throughout the school year
- Provide other program support as needed.
POSITION TYPE / EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK
- Part- time position @ $16 / hour.
- You are available to work Monday-Friday, 2:30 pm - 6 pm (15-20 hours per week) with room for flexibility.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Work is performed in a typical community center and school environment.
TRAVEL:
- Able to travel to various sites in New York City (mainly Washington Heights and Morning side Heights) for training sessions.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Strong academic skills and knowledge of New York State standards and test preparation.
- Genuine interest in working with culturally diverse 6th-8th Grade students, and being able to promote positive character development.
- A sincere desire to effect positive social and academic change in the lives of NYC youth.
- Well-organized, reliable and punctual.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Can work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
- Comfortable learning and modeling universal Jewish values while working in and with a large, diverse population.
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- High school diploma.
- Experience working with youth in a classroom, after-school, or community-based environment.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s or Associate Degree in progress.
- Experience as a Group Leader using a positive youth development model.
WORK AUTHORIZATION & CLEARANCE:
- Documentation of U.S. citizenship or eligibility to work in the U.S.
- Must pass the background check, medical exams, fingerprinting and other requirements of the Department of Health (DOH), Department of Education (DOE), and Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD).
