The heavy equipment operator’s primary responsibility is the safe and efficient operation of heavy equipment for various applications including commercial excavation, earth moving, site preparation, and utility projects. While it is not required that every operator be skilled with every piece of equipment, it is preferred that our operators have a wide range of experience with many types of equipment and aspects of heavy construction and a versatile skill set. Must be able to exercise independent judgment as to work methods, tools, and equipment required. This position may be required to perform a variety of other duties assigned in addition to those listed below.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Completing assigned tasks while ensuring the quality and quantity of your work; always maintaining high standards.
  • Demonstrating a working knowledge of construction and safety measures.
  • Daily check fluids, wear parts, tires, glass, and general condition of the machinery assigned to use. Report issues and maintenance required immediately.
  • Adapt to changing environment including traffic, soil conditions, and weather.
  • Manage material efficiently whether excavating, loading haul vehicles, placing materials, fine grading, or installing utilities.
  • Operate a range of machine sizes and types for required use and application including excavators, dozers, compactors, articulated and ridged frame haul trucks, tractors, graders, or other heavy equipment.
  • Ability to perform manual general labor as needed on the job site.
  • Ability to plan and layout jobs from start to finish in order to meet or exceed deadlines.
  • Able to demonstrate excellent communication between you, your supervisor, the office, and crews.
  • Act as a team player and be able to interact with staff at all levels of the company.

Additional Job Duties and Responsibilities:Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Company policies, procedures, products and services.
  • Knowledge and competency with each machine type.
  • Earthwork and grading experience; utilizing machinery for a variety of tasks including mass earthwork, loading of hauling vehicles, placing materials, compacting, moisture conditioning, and fine grading.
  • Safe operation of each machine and maintaining situational awareness at all times.
  • Recognize mechanical issues immediately as they develop with engine, hydraulic, and electrical systems and take action to shut down and secure the machine to avoid additional damage.
  • High attention to detail.
  • Must possess a strong work ethic, positive attitude, and an ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to effectively and professionally communicate with a diverse group of individuals.
  • Ability to load and unload building materials, tools, and equipment.

Education and Experience:
  • High school or equivalent.
  • Operates one or more of the following equipment proficiently: excavator, dozer, blade, scraper.
  • Driver's license and clean driving record required; CDL Preferred.

Experience:
  • Heavy equipment operation: 2 years (Required).

License/Certification:
  • Driver's License and acceptable driving record (Required).
  • CDL (Preferred).
