Position: CDC Extended Resource Special Education Teacher for Grades K-2

Servicing: Newport City Schools

Job Summary: The Special Education Teacher provides services as an employee of STAFFEZ serving the Newport City Schools.  Full-time (8-3) or part-time (8-11). A Modified or Comprehensive Special Education endorsement is required.  The position could become a full-time employee with the district.

Starting Date: Immediate Until Filled.

Work Year, Hours & Compensation: Hours vary depending on assignment. Pay is based on years of experience, degree, and qualifications, $42.00 to $48.00 per hour.

About the position:

The role involves working with approximately 14 students in grades K-2 with the help of two full-time educational assistants in a self-contained classroom for the first half of the day. After lunch, the students participate through general education inclusion, with the adults acting as their support in the general education classroom. *Depending on the candidate, this could either be a full-time position (8-3) or part-time (8-11).

  • Represent the District and STAFFEZ in a professional manner by performing all job functions at a satisfactory or above level.
  • Interact with co-workers, administration, students, parents, and the community in a positive supportive, and cooperative way.
  • Performs other related duties, including special projects, as required or requested, consistent with reasonable expectations for the contracted position.
  • Meet and instruct assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated.
  • Develop and maintain a classroom environment conducive to effective learning within the limits of the resources provided by the District.
  • Prepare for classes assigned and show written evidence of preparation upon request of the principal.
  • Encourage students to set and maintain classroom behavior standards and report to the appropriate administrator information about individual student compliance with school and district behavioral expectations and state and federal laws.
  • Employ a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media, consistent with the physical limitations of the location provided and the needs and capabilities of the individuals or student groups involved.
  • Strive to implement the district’s philosophy of education and instructional goals and objectives by instruction and action. Reading training/background preferred with a strong knowledge of Response to Intervention and Common Core State Standards.
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Evaluate student progress on a regular basis.
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, District policy, and administrative regulations.
  • Assist in upholding and enforcing school rules, administrative regulations, and Board Policy.
  • Make provision for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when required and requested to do so under reasonable terms.
  • Attend and participate in meetings involving the faculty and other participants that are of reasonable length and address a relevant educational topic as a legitimate function and obligation of professional educators.
  • Collaborate with other members of the staff in planning instructional goals, objectives, and methods.
  • Collaborate in the selection of books, equipment, and other instructional materials.
  • Accept a share of responsibility for co-curricular activities as assigned.
  • Work to establish and maintain open lines of communication with students and their parents concerning both the broad academic and behavioral progress of all assigned students.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative relations with others.
  • Provide for professional growth through an ongoing program of reading, workshops, seminars, conferences and/or advanced course work at institutions of higher education.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor students IEP needs in compliance with state and federal law and district procedures.
  • Strive to implement assistive technology in instruction and meet individual student needs.

Qualifications:
  • Tennessee licensure with CDC/Extended Resource special education endorsement(s) required.
  • Completion of the required Global Compliance Network online training modules.
  • Demonstrated record of good attendance and punctuality.
  • Demonstrated strong communication and interpersonal skills.  Demonstrated ability to speak clearly and concisely both in oral and written communication.
  • Must meet criminal history background requirements (requires FBI Fingerprint and/or drug test).

Physical Requirements: Heavy Work: Exerts up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, end/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or move objects.
