Sanitation DriverDepartment: Public Works – SanitationPay Grade: Z-154FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

JOB SUMMARY:Semi-skilled work in the care and operation of refuse collection vehicles and other trucks/equipment used to collect residential and commercial garbage, trash and yard debris. Work is performed under the direction of the Sanitation Superintendent and is reviewed through observation, completed work orders, and written reports for results obtained. This mandatory testing position requires screening for illegal substance and alcohol use.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Drive a variety of equipment such as: garbage truck, tractor, trash loading equipment, dump truck, etc.
  • Operate mechanized equipment in the loading and unloading of solid waste, recyclables, and other solid waste materials.
  • Load and haul solid waste materials from collection sites to transfer station or other designated sites for disposal or processing. 
  • Manually and mechanically pick up garbage, trash and yard debris.
  • Collect and deliver refuse containers.
  • Complete designated/assigned route in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Judge height and distance while operating or driving vehicle.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on vehicles/equipment prior to operation to include, but not limited to, safety equipment check, vehicle walk around and appropriate pre-operation maintenance.
  • Identify and report bio-hazardous waste, medical waste and all other hazardous waste/materials such as asbestos, batteries, acids, gas, flammable chemicals/materials, etc. to the supervisor.
  • Prepare accurate vehicle condition reports.
  • Responsible for cleaning and maintaining assigned vehicles to divisional standards of appropriate levels of cleanliness.
  • Respond to citizen and internal inquiries and complaints in a timely and courteous manner by referring to appropriate personnel.
  • Supervise a group of semi-skilled workers assigned to the vehicle.
  • Perform other related work as required or assigned.

This is a mission critical position: Essential employees may be required to work during an undeclared or declared emergency. The Public Works Superintendent makes the determination on who will be required to work in times of emergency.
QUALIFICATIONS 
Education and Experience: High School Diploma or GED. Minimum of two (2) years of experience driving Class 8 trucks and other heavy trucks. Knowledge of the safe and routine maintenance of equipment.
 
Licenses or Certifications: 
  • Possess and maintain a valid State of Florida Class E driver license.
  • Possess and maintain a valid State of Florida Class B CDL driver license with airbrake endorsement, or obtain within six (6) months of employment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of operation, maintenance, capabilities, limitations and safety aspects of refuse collection vehicle.
  • Knowledge of D.O.T. and traffic regulations.
  • Knowledge in the proper care and safe operation of heavy-duty trucks.
  • Basic knowledge of the principles of operation of hydraulic and motor equipment; ability to detect malfunctioning performance and report findings, in written form, to the appropriate personnel.
  • Skilled in the operation of assigned equipment. 
  • Ability to read street and traffic signs and comprehend geographical locations.
  • Ability to understand and comply with oral and written instructions/communications.
  • Ability to apply preventative maintenance and service to motor vehicles and motorized equipment and to make minor adjustments to correct performance malfunctions in the field.
  • Ability to supervise a group of semi-skilled workers.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments and the public.
  • Ability to work on all scheduled holidays and weekends, if required.
  • Ability to operate a City vehicle safely.

REQUIRED PHYSICAL, MENTAL AND INTERPERSONAL CAPABILITIESThis position requires the following physical, mental and interpersonal capabilities: 
  • Continuously operate sanitation equipment to very exacting tolerances calling for full coordination of sensory and manipulative ability. 
  • Frequently required to sit and talk or hear. 
  • Regularly required to use hands to finger, feel or operate objects, tools or controls and reach with hands and arms. 
  • Occasionally involves the regular, and at times sustained, performance of bending, kneeling, stooping, squatting, stretching, reaching and working in confined spaces. 
  • Occasionally required to lift and/or carry up to 100 pounds. 
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:Work is performed primarily outdoors. Employee is regularly exposed to outdoor weather and adverse environmental conditions. Involves possible exposure to hazards from electrical/mechanical power equipment, housekeeping/cleaning agents/chemicals and medical waste. May be exposed to the risk of blood borne diseases. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. Works in an environment with heavy equipment and machinery that could result in bodily harm to co-workers or others. Flexible work hours or shifts are possible with weekend hours.
