Definition:The Greenskeeper, under the supervision of the Golf Course Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent, is to perform routine manual labor involved in golf course maintenance; do semi-skilled grounds construction and maintenance work; operate small hand-powered equipment; and occasionally perform work involving large equipment such as tractors, loaders and large mowers. Each groundskeeper may be assigned responsibility for the care and maintenance of several designated holes on the golf course and does related work as required.

Typical Functions:The Greenskeeper will be required to perform the following tasks, but not limited to:
  • Operates mowers and string trimmers in trimming greens, collars, tees, around trees, fence lines, banks and hillsides; edges cart paths, sprinkler heads, valve boxes, and Kirby markers; edges, rakes and maintains sand bunkers.
  • Sets tee markers and cups on greens daily; maintains ball washers; replaces tee towels and flags when needed; removes tree debris; dumps tee garbage cans; and sand and seeds tee and fairway divots.
  • Maintains fuel and fluid levels for all types of equipments used on a daily basis; reports equipment problems or failure to the Equipment Technician immediately.
  • Returns all equipment to the designated location at the maintenance facility free of debris.
  • Cleans their section of the maintenance facility daily.
  • Waters greens, tees, and fairways.
  • Applies herbicide to designated mulch and non-turf areas under the direct supervision of a certified applicator.
  • Maintains clean and straight rope lines to redirect cart traffic around turf areas with issues.
  • Helps with project work; assists in the construction of new golf course features.
  • May be asked to operate mowers, dump trucks, or other light equipment.
  • Performs other duties as directed by his/her supervisor.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.
  • Ability to work in all types of weather (heat, humidity, rain, etc.)

Qualifications:
  • Requires knowledge of methods and materials used in grounds and landscape area construction/maintenance work; working knowledge of and the ability to use hand and power tools and equipment; ability to operate trucks and light motorized equipment; physical strength, stamina and agility; and ability to follow oral and written directions.
  •  A knowledge of and/or ability to play the game golf and understand how job performance affects the playing conditions of the golf course.
  • Highly encouraged to maintain effective employee and membership relations.
  • Requires a valid California driver’s license

Responsibilities:

Superintendent/Assistant Superintendent to Greenskeeper:
  •  Inform Greenskeeper of any maintenance practices that would relate to their daily duties.
  • Provide clear and concise instructions and safety training on all equipment and jobs set forth.
  • Provide necessary resources and a safe environment to complete all tasks set forth.
  • Provide employees to assist with completion of projects.

Greenskeeper to Superintendent/Assistant Superintendent:
  • Inform Superintendent/Assistant Superintendent of any conditions that are of concern.
    • Vandalism
    • Equipment failure or breakdown
    • Equipment abuse
    • Abnormal turf conditions such as dry areas, disease, animal damage, etc.
  • Provide daily progress report verbally and inform Superintendent/Assistant Superintendent when alterations are necessary and tasks are completed.
