Mokena, IL, population 19,887, is a family-oriented suburban community with outstanding schools, parks, and excellent municipal services, located approximately 35 miles southwest of Chicago, in northeast Will County. The Village of Mokena is seeking a self-motivated, highly collaborative, and innovative problem-solver to serve as a Planning Technician.


The Planning Technician is responsible for reviewing and processing a wide variety of development proposals and land use requests, including (but not limited to) zoning permit applications, variations, Special Use Permits, and Planned Unit Developments. The Planning Technician is supervised by the Community Development Director and Assistant Director. The position serves as staff liaison to the Planning Commission/Zoning Board of Appeals and Site Plan & Architectural Review Committee. This position requires excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills because the Planning Technician is responsible for preparing initial reports and presentations to each governing body and Village Board. This position also requires the capacity to think proactively and strategically, and the ability to work effectively and harmoniously with staff, elected officials, residents and other local stakeholder groups, within a fast-paced environment. Public speaking and professional writing are consistent components of this position.


The successful candidate should possess a bachelor’s degree (B.A.) from an accredited four-year college or university; or 1-2 years of related experience and/or training in urban and regional planning, land use design, government administration, or related field. Master’s degree and/or AICP certification is preferred, but not required.


All applicants must possess a valid Illinois Driver’s License. The annual salary range is $68,008 to $87,882, depending on qualifications and experience.
