This is an excellent opportunity for a mid- to senior-level nonprofit leader who wants to deepen their experience across a range of nonprofit functions. This person will lead multiple work streams, provide key support to our programmatic staff, and serve as a staff liaison to our Board of Directors.


Based in New York and reporting to our Executive Director, The Bell’s Deputy Director will execute on our mission by overseeing a broad portfolio that includes operations, finance, development, and communications. They will support our growth by ensuring the organization runs smoothly while our Executive Director increases his time and focus on cultivating new regional partnerships and institutional donors.


The Deputy Director will manage budgets, lead fundraising efforts, and build partnerships that amplify our work. They’ll also help shape our strategy and represent The Bell in key conversations with funders and partners.

The ideal candidate will have an appetite and skill for developing strong internal systems and knowing when to consult, delegate, or act. We’re looking for someone who’s not just experienced, but also deeply committed to our mission of elevating student voices and creating pathways to media careers.


Key Responsibilites
  • Manage day-to-day operations, ensuring internal processes run smoothly and efficiently across the organization.
  • Lead financial management, including budget development, forecasting, and reporting.
  • Drive fundraising and development efforts, especially by managing donor relations and identifying new revenue opportunities.
  • Manage external communications, including outreach to funders, partners, and media, to amplify The Bell’s mission and impact.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director on strategic planning to support organizational growth and sustainability.
  • Build and maintain partnerships with key stakeholders, fostering relationships that align with The Bell’s mission and values.
  • Directly support team members in operations, development, and communications to achieve program and organizational goals.


Qualifications
  • Six or more years of full-time experience, with a strong background in operations, finance, and development.
  • Two or more years of experience managing at least one direct report, with evidence of fostering collaboration and accountability.
  • Proven success in fundraising, donor relations, and identifying new revenue streams.
  • Experience managing budgets, financial reporting, and forecasting.
  • Strong communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to represent the organization externally to funders, partners, and the media.
  • Experience in organizational strategy, growth, and long-term planning.
  • A story that communicates a clear passion for The Bell’s mission, and a commitment to elevating student voices and promoting equity in media.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in youth development, journalism, or media organizations.
  • Familiarity with financial software and technology platforms (e.g., QuickBooks, Google Workspace, and other productivity tools), especially as they relate to managing a nonprofit.

Compensation and Benefits
  • Salary range: $85,000 to $95,000, depending on experience.
