Job Summary
A premier law firm is seeking an experienced Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to lead its financial strategy and operations. The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) for a law firm is responsible for overseeing all financial operations, including strategic financial planning, accounting, risk management, and reporting. The CFO will work closely with the firm’s Managing Partners and Executive Committee to support growth, profitability, and long-term financial sustainability. This role ensures the law firm maintains sound financial practices while complying with industry regulations, trust accounting, and firm-specific client needs.
Key Responsibilities:
- Financial Strategy & Leadership
- Develop and execute financial strategies that align with the firm's short-term and long-term business objectives.
- Provide financial advice and analysis to the Managing Partners and Practice Group Leaders on firm profitability, pricing, and partner compensation.
- Advise on firm-wide financial planning, including revenue forecasts, profitability models, and budgeting strategies.
- Budgeting, Forecasting, and Financial Analysis
- Oversee the preparation of firm-wide budgets and financial forecasts, including revenue projections based on billable hours, realization rates, and collections.
- Provide detailed financial analysis of practice areas, client profitability, and firm costs to inform decision-making.
- Ensure effective cost management, including overhead, staffing costs, and outside counsel fees.
- Billing and Collections Management
- Oversee billing processes to ensure efficient and accurate invoicing, including compliance with client billing guidelines.
- Ensure effective collections strategies are in place to optimize cash flow while maintaining client relationships.
- Work with legal staff to develop alternative fee arrangements (AFAs) and pricing strategies that balance profitability with client satisfaction.
- Trust and Client Accounting
- Ensure compliance with state and federal trust accounting rules (IOLTA or equivalent).
- Maintain strict oversight of client funds and ensure the firm’s fiduciary obligations are met.
- Risk Management and Compliance
- Ensure compliance with all relevant financial laws, tax regulations, and audit requirements specific to law firms.
- Maintain strong internal controls to safeguard the firm’s financial integrity.
- Manage relationships with external auditors and ensure timely completion of audits.
- Partner Compensation and Equity Management
- Manage and oversee the partner compensation model, including profit-sharing, bonuses, and equity allocations.
- Analyze and recommend adjustments to compensation structures to support retention and performance objectives.
- Capital Management & Investments
- Oversee capital management, including firm investments, capital accounts, and distributions to partners.
- Develop and maintain banking relationships to support the firm’s financial health, including financing for growth initiatives or large-scale investments.
- Team Leadership & Development
- Lead and mentor the finance and accounting team, ensuring proper staffing, training, and development opportunities.
- Foster a culture of accountability and performance within the finance department.
Qualifications and Skills:
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or related field required. MBA or CPA preferred.
- Experience: Minimum of 10 years of experience in senior financial management, with a strong preference for experience within a professional services environment, ideally a law firm.
- Skills:
- Strong understanding of law firm economics, including pricing, profitability, and partner compensation models.
- Experience managing trust accounts and ensuring compliance with trust accounting rules.
- Expertise in financial planning, analysis, and cost management in a legal or professional services context.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency in law firm financial systems and software (e.g., Elite, Aderant, Clio).
