Full Job Description
The Sally J. Pimentel Deaf & Hard of Hearing Center is seeking a visionary and dynamic individual to join the nonprofit agency as a Deaf Mentor in the Fort Myers area. (Agency serves five counties)
Principal Duties
As a Deaf Mentor you will:
- Provide services to deaf/hard-of-hearing individuals, ages birth to adult, in the areas of American Sign Language (ASL) and deaf culture.
- Prepare and write lesson plans.
- Perform weekly visits to schools as part of the school districts’ deaf programs, and provide models for parents of the activities to be worked on with children during the week.
- Teach on-site and/or zoom classes to deaf individuals, including but not limited to driver’s license, citizenship, independent living skills, and others, as needed
- Help families and individuals access deaf community activities and events.
- Establish positive relationships and build trust with Deaf Community as liaison to agency.
- Apply bilingual, bicultural teaching methods to deaf/hard-of-hearing individuals.
- Help build existing Deaf Mentor Program with new, creative, and innovative ideas.
- Assist with other agency activities as needed.
The Ideal Candidate:
· Must be deaf.
· Must have advanced American Sign Language (ASL) skills and have knowledge of Deaf culture.
· Must be knowledgeable in latest assistive technology including apps
- Should be well-versed in language acquisition, principles of ASL best practices, and have a specialization in teaching adults the principles of ASL and Deaf culture.
- Deal with people in a manner which shows sensitivity, tact, and professionalism.
- Communicate clearly and effectively.
- Maintain strict confidentiality.
- Successful completion of a Level 2 criminal background check.
· Must be positive, team-oriented, self-motivated, dependable, adaptable, and must possess strong work ethic.

Work Environment
This is a Part-Time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Thursday, 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Occasionally, flexibility is needed to meet client’s needs; working evenings, weekends alternative hours required as job duties demand.

Supplemental Information
- Travel is required.
- Must be willing to work a schedule that meets the needs of the families being served, including some evenings and Saturdays, and be willing to participate in multiple Deaf culture events throughout the year.
- Risks found in the typical office setting, which is adequately lighted, heated and ventilated, e.g., safe use of office equipment, avoiding trips and falls, observing fire regulations, etc...
- Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to perform the work; however, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying light items; driving an automobile, etc. Special physical demands are not required to perform the work.
- Preference may be given to applicants with a degree in Early Childhood Education and/or experience working with deaf/hard-of-hearing children.
