Senior GIS Analyst
ESA seeks a highly motivated individual with at least five (5) years of full-time professional experience to join our Northern California team as a Senior GIS Analyst. If you are looking for an opportunity to contribute your geospatial data management and analysis skills to environmental protection and conservation on a wide range of public and private projects in California, please keep reading and click to apply. This is a remote opportunity with expectations/requirements to work PST working hours. Preference is given to candidates in PST and who can occasionally work hybrid in-office from one of our Northern CA ESA office locations.
As a Senior GIS Analyst at ESA, you will work on projects ranging from wetlands, water quality and other biological resources protection and restoration, to large infrastructure planning and construction, to climate change adaptation, housing and energy system development. Your primary duties will include data acquisition, curation and management, support for mobile data collection, spatial analysis, cartographic design and development of web maps and applications. Over time, you will also have opportunities to coordinate and lead project teams, train and supervise junior teammates, and contribute to marketing and business development activities. To thrive in this role, you will possess not only advanced technical skills, but also strengths in oral and written communication, teamwork and time management.
Who You Are
A passionate GIS professional with at least 5 years of experience, you have demonstrated skill and efficiency in core methods of geospatial analysis for environmental issues. You have up-to-date knowledge of methods and standards for geospatial analysis, data management, cartography, and web map/application development using the Esri ArcGIS platform. You also have strong interest and ability to contribute to long-term growth and innovation in our Technology Services Practice as we advance the use of remote sensing, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and other emerging technologies in the delivery of ESA products and services across all markets. You are a self-directed problem-solver, capable of working in a fast-paced environment to respond to the immediate needs of internal and external clients and meet deadlines. You are also conscientious about detail and accuracy, collaborate well with colleagues and clients across diverse disciplines, and are highly capable of working independently on complex task assignments. As a Senior GIS Analyst, you are also ready to train and mentor junior analysts and coordinate project teams when needed.
Experience with Esri ArcGIS Pro software and ArcGIS Online is required, including use of mobile data collection tools, development of other Esri web-based applications, and curation of authoritative data for publishing online. Knowledge of California natural resources, city and county datasets is preferred. Prior experience in a consulting role is advantageous, but not required. Experience using Python or R packages to streamline and automate workflows and access data using API's is a big plus, including using Jupyter Notebook ArcGIS integration. Familiarity with AutoCAD and graphic design software (Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator), analyzing and visualizing data in Tableau or PowerBI, or using other mapping and open-source GIS applications are also desirable.
Preference is given to candidates who are available to work hybrid from one of our Northern California offices in Sacramento, Oakland, Petaluma, San Jose, or San Francisco. Qualified remote candidates located in one of the approved states will also be considered. All candidates must be fully available to work during ESA's Pacific Standard Time business hours.
All candidates are encouraged to submit a cover letter in addition to your resume to help us understand how your experience is a fit for the position. Writing samples and/or sample work may be requested as a step in the interview process. Occasional travel required for annual team meetings and possible project-based site visits.
What You Will Do for ESA
As a Senior GIS Analyst, you will conduct geospatial analyses for environmental assessments, feasibility studies, and impact analyses, providing critical insights to support project planning and decision-making. Your role includes compiling, curating, and managing geospatial data, supporting mobile data collection, and developing high-quality cartographic and web-based products. You will serve as a project lead for tasks with significant geospatial components, collaborating with scientists, planners, engineers, and other technical experts across ESA's interdisciplinary teams. In this position, you will develop and present spatial analysis results to clients, internal teams, and at public meetings, ensuring clear and compelling communication of complex information.
In addition, you will help mentor and coach junior GIS analysts, supervising their work and guiding them through project tasks to ensure high-quality outcomes. You'll contribute to ESA's marketing and business development by supporting proposals, providing technical input, and participating in professional conferences and networking activities.
