Pediatric Neurosurgery Opportunity in Freestanding Children's Hospital

The Division of Neurosurgery at Arkansas Children’s Hospital and the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences are recruiting for a fourth pediatric neurosurgeon. The new faculty member will have primary clinical responsibilities at Arkansas Children’s Hospital and will also establish a transition of care clinic at the UAMS Medical Center.


The Division of Neurosurgery is composed of 3 attending pediatric neurosurgeons, 2 advanced practice nurses, and 3 specialty nurses. Clinical volume is over 500 cases per year, covering the breadth of pediatric neurosurgery. The group offers comprehensive neurosurgical care at the main campus in Little Rock and outpatient services at Arkansas Children’s Northwest in Springdale.


The Department of Neurosurgery at UAMS is accredited for a total of 14 residents. Two residents are on service at ACH at a time, providing junior and senior level coverage. Residents provide 24-hour call coverage at ACH.


Responsibilities:
  • Arkansas Children’s Hospital (70%)
    • Provide outpatient, inpatient, and surgical care for patients with pediatric neurosurgical conditions. Depending on candidate interest, opportunity for development of subspecialty interest may be available.
    • 1-in-4 attending call coverage. Residents take primary call.
    • Mentor residents in pediatric neurosurgery.
    • Participate in the quality improvement initiatives of the division.
    • Opportunities for research are available.
  • UAMS Medical Center (30%)
    • Establish a transition-of-care clinic for patients with complex needs who age out of the pediatric system. These would include myelomeningocele patients and those with complex hydrocephalus.
    • Provide elective operative care for patients in the transition-of-care clinic.
    • Be available to assist with the care of adults with "pediatric-type" conditions such as tethered spinal cord and Chiari malformation.
    • Mentor residents in care of adult patients with pediatric conditions.

Requirements:
  • MD or DO degree.
  • Ability to be licensed to practice medicine in the state of Arkansas.
  • Completion of an ACGME accredited neurosurgery residency program.
  • Completion of an ACPNF accredited pediatric neurosurgery fellowship program.
  • Board eligible or board certified (with recognition of focused practice in pediatric neurosurgery) by the American Board of Neurosurgery or the American Osteopathic Board of Surgery.
