Seattle, United States MongoDB Full time

MongoDB’s mission is to empower innovators to create, transform, and disrupt industries by unleashing the power of software and data. We enable organizations of all sizes to easily build, scale, and run modern applications by helping them modernize legacy workloads, embrace innovation, and unleash AI. Our industry-leading developer data platform, MongoDB Atlas, is the only globally distributed, multi-cloud database and is available in more than 115 regions across AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure. Atlas allows customers to build and run applications anywhere—on premises, or across cloud providers.

The Core Server Engineering team architects, builds, and maintains the MongoDB database binary, which powers the MongoDB Atlas and MongoDB Enterprise products. The team consists of a diverse set of disciplines including query optimization and execution, replication and sharding, storage engine and execution, service architecture, and security.

As the Director of Technical Program Management at MongoDB, you will lead the strategic planning, execution, and delivery of some of our most business critical technical projects and programs within our core server engineering area. You will oversee a team of Technical Program Managers and work to elevate and perfect the art of program management, partnering closely with engineering and product management.

This role can be based out of our West Coast offices or remotely in the West Coast region.

Candidate Profile:
  • Proven success as someone who can effectively partner with stakeholders to manage high-value change in a technical organization
  • Able to deconstruct complex challenges into coherent components and steadily advance towards solving them
  • Deep experience managing large-scale programs, end-to-end, across the whole software development process, encompassing strategic planning and successful product delivery
  • An ability to lead with innovative insights through strong analytical and communication skills
  • Demonstrated success partnering with technical stakeholders on breaking down engineering challenges in a methodical manner: establishing goals, setting priorities, outlining the project's scope and implementation steps
  • Crisp execution and facilitation skills in the face of ambiguity and competing priorities
  • Experience building successful teams and cultivating an environment of trust, collaboration, and intellectual honesty
  • Experience identifying and supporting areas of growth, providing constructive and effective feedback with empathy for reports that take into account their skills, backgrounds and working styles
Position Expectations:
  • Successfully leverage deep experience and knowledge of engineering operations and product development flows to set an innovative strategy for programs owned by reporting TPMs
  • Model rigorous strategic and tactical thinking and execution
  • Lead and manage a team of TPMs, inspiring challenges for high performers and guiding high potential growth team members who need more support
  • Cultivate a collaborative atmosphere that promotes learning, creativity, and invention
  • Anticipate and remove obstacles that slow down or prevent TPM reports and product teams from delivering on goals
  • Build alignment across cross-functional leaders by fostering strategic partnerships to drive business goals forward
  • Be a trusted strategic partner for executive management to ensure program success
  • Create clarity in a complex technical environment, align stakeholder’s expectations and manage engineering communication
  • Capably facilitate engineering discussions leveraging technical aptitude and analytical skills to summarize complex trade-offs, extract priorities and next steps
Requirements:
  • 10-15 years experience managing complex, technical initiatives and engineering programs from initiation to completion
  • A degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, related fields or equivalent industry experience
  • Experience with MongoDB, databases, or comparable complex technology
  • Experience with technical design discussions and ability to summarize complex trade-offs and extract priorities
  • Demonstrated technical aptitude and strong analytical skills with proven results
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to adapt your style and delivery for a variety of audiences
Success Measures:
  • In 3 months you will have ramped up on MongoDB products and understand the Core Server Engineering team as a whole. You will also have established partnerships with relevant engineering and product executives
  • In 6 months you will have settled deeply in the role, performed your first set of P&G reviews, and identified a vision for the team
  • In 12 months you will have sorted out interplanetary travel and how MongoDB’s program management team made it all possible
