Job Summary:

Openwater is creating a next-generation imaging technology that can enable us to see inside our bodies in great detail. With this advancement comes the promise of new abilities to diagnose and treat disease as well as the possibility for breakthroughs in BCI, such as communication by thought alone. As an Opto-Mechanical Engineer at Openwater, you will be responsible for leading the opto-mechanical engineering aspects for the development of our products. This individual will be working closely with other members of our team developing, integrating and miniaturizing multiple parts of the system. The candidate must be a pro-active, strong problem solver, and an experienced designer who can implement the design requirements as described by our scientific and engineering staff. You will analyze and develop highly innovative solutions to complex problems.

Responsibilities and Duties:

Responsibilities include opto-mechanical system concept development, opto-mechanical system architecture, test and evaluation of opto-mechanical performance parameters at both the component and system level. A successful candidate is expected to perform the following essential tasks:

  • Performs a range of design development, analysis and design reviews independently.
  • Participate in the conceptual system design, working closely with optical, laser and ultrasound design staff.
  • Integrate optical, ultrasound and laser components in a compact and elegant form function.
  • Coordinate and work closely with other engineering disciplines to define system specifications and requirements.
  • Produce working drawings for system components.
  • Maintains drawing database.


Qualifications and Skills:

  • B.S. or M.S or Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Physics or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in the design of innovative laser systems and opto-mechanical systems.
  • Strong expertise in traditional parts manufacture including rapid prototyping, with deep technical knowledge including up-to-date familiarity with the literature in these areas.
  • Highly experienced in CAD tools specifically Onshape or Solidworks, including FEA.
  • Broad knowledge of material properties used in opto-mechanical designs including UV cured and epoxy adhesives.
  • Strong expertise in opto-mechanical systems design including strength of materials, CTE of materials.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and people skills are needed.
  • Experience with display holography is a plus.
  • US Work authorization required.
