Your Impact

Contribute to AIoT Device-level Firmware Infrastructure as part of the Platform Firmware development team and advance Axon’s mission to Protect Life. Platform Firmware supports all of Axon’s Camera-based products, key ownership of the Cellular LTE Link, Automated Test Systems for organizational Engineering Excellence, and is always at the fore-front of Innovation with Hardware Engineering for new programs. Firmware development environments primarily include Embedded Linux (C, C++, Golang, Yocto) and RTOS on Microcontrollers (C). Rust is being explored. Solve very challenging Firmware problems while applying Data Structure and Object Oriented thinking to build infrastructure APIs used by Axon’s Embedded Product teams.

The Platform Firmware team is hiring because there are career-defining, new innovative product-line programs being started in 2024 and 2025. These new programs synthesize all of Axon’s technologies and core competencies into what will be revolutionary offerings for our Customers. New team(s) are being built-out with a bias towards Central-Eastern USA to overlap with our teams in Western Europe. In addition, there is always innovative new work to be done on everything the Platform Firmware team supports.


Where You’ll Work

Location: Working from home, from Seattle or Scottsdale
Travel: Firmware Engineering requires collaboration with Hardware Engineering and being hands-on. While the job is remote from Seattle (or Scottsdale), travel obligations to the office for Board Bring-up, Hardware and Manufacturing Support are required during critical build milestones of the Product Development Life-Cycle. We are forecasting 10% travel to Scottsdale, Brussels or Finland over a period of 18mo - remainder of time is discretionary to your choice of working from home or working from the office.

What You’ll Do

Reports to: Firmware Engineering Manager, Platform Firmware
Direct Reports: None

  • Implementation and verification of Firmware for Battery Safety logic
  • Implementation and verification of Firmware for Battery Fuel-Gauging logic, including when working with multiple batteries that work together to create a composite Fuel Gauge 0 - 100% value
  • Implementation and verification of Firmware for Accelerated Battery Charging with Thermal considerations
  • Implementation and verification of Firmware for De-rating Batteries to achieve State of Health RMA targets
  • Implementation and verification of Firmware for eLinux User-space daemons that override Power Management and leverage Qualcomm System-on-Chip PMICs
  • Implement fleet-wide metrics of scale of 500K+ devices of Battery Data with Dashboards (Splunk), Metrics and Alerting with key ability to spot trends and remediate fleet-wide issues as needed
  • Diagnose, debug and write accessible failure analysis reports with remediation steps to Leadership on critical products that have been RMA’d by Axon’s Customers
  • Collaborate heavily with Battery Engineers in the Electrical Engineering on any/all Battery topics; including meetings with APAC Battery vendors
  • Support Battery Runtime Profiling with breakdowns of any/all products supported by Axon both via Joulescopes and Automated Test Systems (ATS)
  • Write concise Battery Test Plans for HW Verification and Validation Engineers
  • Build and advance Axon R&D’s Automated Test Systems (ATS) that focus on Battery Profiling and Simulation
  • Advance Axon R&D’s Battery Regression Automation posture to fullest extent possible as limited by hardware
  • Support any/all Platform Firmware task across any program as-needed when no Battery-specific work is required at the time; including but not limited to C, C++, Golang, Python or Rust coding across Microcontrollers, System-on-Modules, System-on-Chips using eLinux, RTOS, GNSS, Wi-Fi, BLE, Sub-GHz, Cellular, etc. technologies for either Customer or Manufacturing Firmware
  • Write and review Design Docs, Pull Requests, and contribute to the Team’s documentation bank
  • Drive Engineering Excellence and adopt a test and metrics-first mindset
  • Be a Team Player, Mentor, Strong Communicator and be ready and willing to support the Team when needed
What You Bring
  • B.S. in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering or equivalent
  • Experience with Battery and Power Management sub-systems, Safety and Thermal
  • Experience in programming with C, C++, Rust, Golang and/or Python
  • Real-world Industry Firmware or Embedded experience of 8+ years developing on Battery-powered IoT products
  • Experience with Bootloaders
  • Experience with RTOS on Microcontrollers
  • Basic ability to read Datasheets and Schematics
  • Experience with concise Technical Writing and Architecture Diagramming
  • Strong understanding of Computer Architecture and Peripherals
  • Strong understanding of Operating Systems, Concurrency and Networking concepts
  • Experience with both Kernel and User-space Embedded Linux with exposure to Yocto, OpenWRT or other Embedded Distros for Board Support Packaging (BSP) is a Plus
