Nuclear Restoration Services Limited (NRS) is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA). NRS is responsible for decommissioning first generation nuclear power stations Berkeley, Bradwell, Chapelcross, Dungeness A, Hinkley Point A, Hunterston A, Oldbury, Sizewell A, Trawsfynydd and Wylfa, and research sites Harwell and Winfrith. NRS is also responsible for electricity generation at hydroelectric plant Maentwrog. As a division of NRS, NRS Dounreay is responsible for the clean-up and demolition of the former centre of fast reactor research and development.

About the roleJob Summary
Provide effective strategy, management, and oversight of Environmental Management across the NRS Programme Delivery, ensuring compliance with all relevant environmental regulations.
As part of the EHSSQ Functional support, the postholder will report to the Head of Profession Environment & Waste and be a member of the EHSS&Q Environment Team.
Key Deliverables
- The post holder will be required to work across the NRS fleet, defining effective strategy and providing management, authoritative advice, and guidance to Programme Delivery on all matters relating to environmental compliance including Environmental Authorisations (Scotland) Regulations (EA(S)R) and the Environmental Permitting Regulations (EPR), as appropriate and relevant company requirements.
- In conjunction with the Head of Profession, support the development of NRS policies and arrangements for Environmental Management to ensure compliance with statutory and Company requirements as appropriate. Through oversight, ensure these are embedded into the Programme Delivery and provide high level advice on their implementation.
- Act as part of the Corporate RWA body.
- In conjunction with the Head of Profession, support the design, delivery, and evaluation of training, acting as coach and mentor where appropriate.
- Report on the availability of suitably qualified and experienced people, in the Programme Delivery, to operate effectively and discharge their legal and contractual obligations.
- Provide assurance of the adequacy Environmental Management arrangements through audit, inspections, investigation of events and self-assessment reviews.
- Deputise for the Head of Profession Environment & Waste, as directed.
- As appropriate, support the interface with the relevant Regulators and external authorities.
Qualifications
- To be (or have been) appointed under Corporate RWA Arrangements, or to hold an RWA Certificate of Competence (Desirable).
- Educated to degree level in a science, engineering, or related discipline or equivalent (Essential).
- Chartered status within an appropriate professional institute or equivalent. (Essential).
SQEP for Role
- Relevant experience in specialism related roles, including but not limited to provision of compelling advice relating directly to regulation, at a senior level in an organisation.
- Experience at a nuclear or similar high hazard site.
- Experience in dealing with EA/SEPA/NRW.
- Detailed knowledge of Site Licence Conditions and Environmental legislation.
- Detailed knowledge of the radioactive substances regulations.
- Experience with providing advice at a strategic level.
- Ability to work within a team or independently. Should be able to work autonomously.
- Good technical writing, attention to detail, and verbal communication skills.

- No specific H&S risk or hazards associated with the role. As a senior member of the EHSS&Q Function the successful candidate will demonstrate behaviours that actively promote company EHSS&Q policies and procedures.

- The equivalent of 25 days (185 hours per year) annual leave plus Public Holidays (59.2 hours per year). This increases by 2 days (14.8 hours per year) annual leave after two full calendar years of service (as at 5th January in the leave year), and an additional 3 days (22.2 hours per year) annual leave after five full calendar years of service (as at 5th January in the leave year). You also have the option to buy or sell the equivalent of 5 days (37 hours) annual leave each year (available in specific windows for the following holiday year). For the purpose of assessing an employee’s annual leave entitlement, a day means seven and two fifths (7.4) hours. A pro rata entitlement will apply for part time workers.

Please be aware this role holder requires security clearance, or the ability to obtain said clearance.
There is a requirement to live within a commutable distance to the sites where the role is based. For central/multi-site roles, we have various hubs across the UK and can be flexible with base location.
