Government Affairs Director
The D.C. Association of REALTORS (DCAR)

Overview
The D.C. Association of REALTORS (DCAR) is seeking a dynamic and experienced Government Affairs Director (GAD) to serve as our primary policy expert and advocate for homeownership and private property rights in the District of Columbia. With nearly 3,000 members across all eight wards, DCAR is a member-driven organization dedicated to promoting the real estate profession and the interests of its members. The GAD will collaborate closely with our CEO, Board of Directors, and Public Policy Committee to achieve our advocacy objectives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead initiatives and conduct research on housing issues while fostering relationships with D.C. municipal officials and partner organizations.
  • Monitor pending legislation and regulatory changes, developing both short- and long-term advocacy strategies.
  • Prepare and write testimony for REALTORS, equipping them for effective advocacy.
  • Staff monthly Public Policy Committee meetings and coordinate subcommittee sessions.
  • Organize speaker series and educational programs to empower REALTORS as advocates.
  • Communicate public policy updates to our membership through a monthly newsletter and special announcements.
  • Serve as a spokesperson for DCAR on policy matters, maintaining professionalism in all interactions with members and the public.
  • Collaborate with federal lobbyists from the National Association of REALTORS (NAR) and local lobbyists to align advocacy efforts.

Reporting Structure
This position reports directly to the Chief Executive Officer and is based in our DuPont Circle office. We offer a flexible hybrid schedule that includes both on-site and remote work. Regular interaction at the Wilson Building and attendance at various policy and political events throughout the district are required, along with occasional out-of-state travel for NAR meetings.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in public administration, government relations, communications, public affairs, or a related field.
  • 3-5 years of advocacy experience in government, non-profit, or private sector organizations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in housing public policy.
  • At least one year of experience with the D.C. Council, the Executive Office of the Mayor, or another D.C. government agency.
  • Advanced degree in a relevant field.

Compensation and Benefits
The expected salary range for this position is a minimum of $100,000 with upward potential based on experience. DCAR offers a generous vacation and paid sick leave policy.
