The Skeletal Conditions (SC) Medical Science Liaison (MSL) / Senior MSL is a regional field-based position supporting the scientific and business interests of BioMarin by cultivating current and future thought leaders in academic and clinical medicine at the local, regional, and national level through in-depth, fair-balanced scientific exchange and strategic insight gathering. MSLs are the primary communicators of BioMarin science within a specific geography with healthcare providers and other key stakeholders and are viewed as peer scientific experts in a designated therapeutic area. The MSLs combine strong business acumen, market awareness, and clinical expertise to serve as a conduit of information to internal cross-functional stakeholders in support of business planning and product development. In this role, you will identify pre-clinical, clinical, and post-marketing study investigators in alignment with the SC Medical Affairs objectives and provide actionable information and insights to internal stakeholders that may enhance the value and appropriate use of BioMarin products. You will also be responsible for supporting the initiation and development of Investigator Research proposals (IRs). The Senior MSL must possess in-depth knowledge of BioMarin's ACH (achondroplasia) approved product, pipeline research, and all associated disease state areas. The MSL / Senior MSL is a team player and possess the capacity to coordinate and manage initiatives or partnerships with external partners independently or with a minimum amount of oversight. This position will report into the Senior Director, SC Medical Unit within the Global Medical Affairs (GMAF) organization. Based on therapeutic needs and product life cycles, the MSL team will focus on certain responsibilities to a greater or lesser degree. The Skeletal Conditions therapeutic area at BioMarin currently has one marketed product and ongoing research in children with ACH and additional growth-related conditions.Territory will be focused on the WESTERN, U.S. (WA, OR, CA, ID, NV, AZ, MT, WY, UT, CO, NM, AK, HI). Candidate to be based within territory.RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
  1. Execute SC medical MSL plan and tactics within assigned territory to meet scientific objectives and company-defined goals for products both marketed and in development.
  2. Development and periodic refinement of an approved MSL Territory Plan designed to support and meet strategic medical objectives.
  3. Provide education relative to disease state and BioMarin products across product lifecycle to health care providers among specialties including Genetics, Pediatric Endocrinology, Pediatric Orthopedics, and other relevant specialties.
  4. Serve as a medical/scientific resource through answering unsolicited medical questions and addressing other related medical information queries.
  5. Engage in scientific exchange and provide feedback on emerging clinical/competitive trends.
  6. Identify, document, discuss and communicate insights to internal stakeholders.
  7. Maintain clinical and technical expertise in relevant therapeutic area.
  8. Partner with medical and research groups and compliantly collaborate with commercial team.
  9. Provide support to BioMarin clinical trials including but not limited to the following: site identification and evaluation; recruitment; investigator meetings; external expert identification; and study management.
  10. Support clinical operations in identifying and interacting with potential investigators for BioMarin products in development as per Medical Affairs therapeutic area plan.
  11. Support the implementation and coordination of external investigator-initiated research.
  12. Participate in local, regional, and national meetings/conferences in support of all scientific and medical objectives.
  13. Review scientific journals, lead, and participate in internal journal clubs.
  14. Serve as a scientific resource to commercial and marketing partners. Participate in sales team training, medical updates, scientific presentations, journal clubs, and other approved meetings as appropriate.
  15. Have responsibility for assigned special projects and mentoring of other team members.
  16. Self-development: Develops and communicates a professional growth plan. Takes responsibility for and actively manages professional development. Continually educates self on global market issues, trends, and product knowledge as it pertains to specific business responsibilities in key therapeutic areas.
  17. Assure compliance with BioMarin operational guidelines.
Education and Experience:MSL
  1. BA/BS in life or health sciences; Advanced degree (MS, doctoral level) is preferred.
  2. 3 or more years of relevant experience in clinical and 1 or more year as an MSL preferred.
  3. Experience in rare genetic diseases, ACH and/or Skeletal Dysplasia therapy preferred.
  4. Experience in product launch, development, and execution preferred.
  5. Knowledge of regulations impacting Medical Affairs and field activities in the pharmaceutical industry.
  6. Excellent oral and written communication, organization, and people skills.
  7. Proven record as a team player.
  8. Project management understanding and experience.
  9. Ability to work in a virtual environment and knowledge of virtual and collaborative systems.
  10. Position will require travel for field engagements and Specialty Congresses (50%-70%).
Sr. MSL
  1. In addition to MSL criteria above, the Sr. MSL has advanced competence in communication, problem solving and adaptability, and foundational competence in leadership, strategic thinking and planning, and problem solving and decision making.
  2. 5 or more years of relevant clinical experience, and 3 or more years of MSL experience is preferred.
  3. Project Leadership experience preferred.

In the U.S., the salary range for this position is $152,000 to $228,000 per year, which factors in various geographic regions. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate's geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. A discretionary bonus and/or long-term incentive units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to the full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the level and position offered.
