Estimator - Civil Construction

Job Description:
We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Estimator or Estimator with a strong background in civil construction and Caltrans projects to join our team. This is a primarily remote position, but the candidate must reside in Northern California and be available for 5-6 days of in-office work per month. The successful candidate will play a key role in developing competitive bids for Caltrans and other public infrastructure projects, including highways, bridges, and roadworks.
Key Responsibilities:
- Prepare detailed and accurate cost estimates for civil construction projects, with a specific focus on Caltrans projects (highways, bridges, grading, paving, etc.).
- Conduct quantity take-offs, pricing labor, materials, and equipment, and develop comprehensive project schedules.
- Collaborate with the project team to ensure alignment between estimates and project scope.
- Work remotely to manage bids and estimates while maintaining availability for 5-6 office days per month.
- Liaise with subcontractors, suppliers, and vendors to obtain competitive pricing for project bids.
- Ensure that all estimates adhere to Caltrans standards, procedures, and requirements.
- Attend occasional site visits and pre-bid meetings to assess project conditions.
- Provide cost models and risk analysis for review by management.
- Keep abreast of market conditions, material costs, and labor rates to ensure competitive and accurate bids.
- Utilize construction estimating software to develop cost proposals.
- Assist with the transition of successful bids to the project management team, ensuring clarity in project objectives and cost breakdowns.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field (or equivalent work experience).
- 5+ years of experience in estimating for civil construction, specifically with Caltrans projects.
- Familiarity with Caltrans standards and bidding procedures.
- Ability to work remotely while residing in Northern California and attend office in-person 5-6 days per month.
- Proficiency in construction estimating software (e.g., HCSS, B2W) and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Strong understanding of civil construction methods and cost components (labor, materials, equipment).
- Experience interpreting construction drawings, specifications, and project documents.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and negotiation skills.
- Ability to collaborate effectively in a remote work environment while managing multiple projects.
- Knowledge of local building regulations and permitting processes.
- Design-build and public works experience is a plus.
