Estimator - Civil Construction

Job Description:

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Estimator or Estimator with a strong background in civil construction and Caltrans projects to join our team. This is a primarily remote position, but the candidate must reside in Northern California and be available for 5-6 days of in-office work per month. The successful candidate will play a key role in developing competitive bids for Caltrans and other public infrastructure projects, including highways, bridges, and roadworks.

Key Responsibilities:

• Prepare detailed and accurate cost estimates for civil construction projects, with a specific focus on Caltrans projects (highways, bridges, grading, paving, etc.).
• Conduct quantity take-offs, pricing labor, materials, and equipment, and develop comprehensive project schedules.
• Collaborate with the project team to ensure alignment between estimates and project scope.
• Work remotely to manage bids and estimates while maintaining availability for 5-6 office days per month.
• Liaise with subcontractors, suppliers, and vendors to obtain competitive pricing for project bids.
• Ensure that all estimates adhere to Caltrans standards, procedures, and requirements.
• Attend occasional site visits and pre-bid meetings to assess project conditions.
• Provide cost models and risk analysis for review by management.
• Keep abreast of market conditions, material costs, and labor rates to ensure competitive and accurate bids.
• Utilize construction estimating software to develop cost proposals.
• Assist with the transition of successful bids to the project management team, ensuring clarity in project objectives and cost breakdowns.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field (or equivalent work experience).
• 5+ years of experience in estimating for civil construction, specifically with Caltrans projects.
• Familiarity with Caltrans standards and bidding procedures.
• Ability to work remotely while residing in Northern California and attend office in-person 5-6 days per month.
• Proficiency in construction estimating software (e.g., HCSS, B2W) and Microsoft Office Suite.
• Strong understanding of civil construction methods and cost components (labor, materials, equipment).
• Experience interpreting construction drawings, specifications, and project documents.
• Excellent communication, organizational, and negotiation skills.
• Ability to collaborate effectively in a remote work environment while managing multiple projects.
• Knowledge of local building regulations and permitting processes.
• Design-build and public works experience is a plus.
