Summary:

The Senior Maintenance Technician is responsible for ensuring that machinery and equipment used in Chemence’s processes for production and manufacturing of medical adhesive devices and other products are kept in the good running order needed to meet business needs. The Tech will install, modify, repair and monitor machinery and equipment. The Sr. Maintenance Technician will teach more junior staff to complete maintenance tasks and trouble-shoot equipment issues.

Specific work includes completing inspections, preventative and corrective maintenance tasks, trouble-shooting specific equipment issues, procuring needed spare parts, and working with vendors and contractors for similar services, to ensure safe and efficient production. Design and light fabrication work is occasionally required. Work includes documenting tasks, following regulatory requirements for our products and communicating findings.

Chemence’s production processes include both automated and manual operations. Equipment varies in complexity from simple manually controlled motors to PLC controlled robotic assembly lines. Processes examples include chemical synthesis, dispenser tube filling, part assembly and packaging. Experience and knowledge with installing, maintaining, improving, and repairing industrial equipment, chemical processing equipment, packaging equipment (blistering, bottle filling, boxing, labelling, pouching, sealer…), and/or automated equipment (pneumatics, robotic, HMI, PLC, …) are needed.

In addition, Senior Maintenance Technician responsibilities will include training and assessing of other technicians, and apprentices and working closely with the Engineering, Quality and Operations to implement continuous improvement initiatives, including installing new equipment.


Key Duties and Responsibilities:

General:

  • Complete assigned preventative and corrective maintenance work, and document work in the computerized maintenance management system (CMMS), in a safe and effective manner.
  • Complete and document daily process and equipment inspections.
  • Assist engineering with the specification, installation, modification and testing of equipment.
  • Perform root cause analysis of machinery issues and resolve problems.
  • Ensure adequate spare parts are maintained and stored in an orderly manner.
  • Delegate work or engage contractors when needed.


Safety:

  • Identify and escalate any activity that has the potential to cause harm or damage.
  • Ensure all lost time, minor and trivial accidents are reported.
  • Ensure a safe working environment exists for self and colleagues by following Chemence’s health, safety environmental and quality management procedures.
  • Follow environmental requirements, including proper disposal of chemical and other wastes.
  • Ensure all company procedures are understood and followed.
  • Use established best-practices for maintenance safety, including lock-out tag-out, wearing PPE and equipment guarding, as appropriate.
  • Use of a chemical respirator is occasionally required.
  • Identify, report and help correct safety deficiencies.


Troubleshooting and Repairing:

  • Carry out diagnosis of faults, the maintenance and repairs to Chemence’s plant equipment in a safe, timely and professional manner and return equipment to operational excellence.
  • Undertake emergency troubleshooting on mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic equipment to determine problems associated with the machines.
  • Investigate the root cause of quality rejects and machine faults; correct these root causes. Document this work.


Preventative Maintenance:

  • Complete planned preventative maintenance tasks and planned work orders as required.
  • Make observations and provide feedback to develop the preventative maintenance system.
  • Assist in the development of preventative maintenance schedules.
  • Identify spares requirements and log usage.
  • Ensure the proper calibration instruments and measuring devices.


Communications and Teamwork:

  • Coordinate with other departments to achieve departmental goals.
  • Prepare periodic reports concerning faulty machines, errors, and processes.
  • Communicate with colleagues and management through the e-mail, texts, and voice calls.
  • Provide technical monitoring for other maintenance technicians and engineers, both on-site and off-site.
  • Estimate length of time required to complete a job.
  • Plan and prioritize work to support production and ensure efficient use of working time.
  • Keep up with current and developing manufacturing, maintenance and engineering trends.
  • Understand and operate within basic cost/budget measures.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Qualifications, Education and/or Experience Required:

  • Minimum 7-year experience with industrial preventative & mechanical maintenance and packaging machinery
  • A 2-year degree related to Industrial Maintenance or equivalent experience. Preference will be given to electrician certification, automation technician or a similar recognized skill certification.
  • Well-developed equipment troubleshooting skills, including hands on electro-mechanical experience. Prefer experience with Allen Bradley PLC controlled automation and Fanuc robots.
  • Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
  • Experience in an FDA / ISO regulated work environment, such as medical device manufacturing preferred
  • Specific knowledge of LOTO procedures and machine guarding
  • Willingness to use PPE, including a full-face respirator
  • Able to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to teach and coach people
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Practical hands-on approach to problem solving
  • Experience of leading and developing multi-skilled people
  • Understanding of the commercial impact of failure/downtime on production and ultimately customer delivery


Language Skills:

  • English required, bilingual (Spanish) a plus.


Physical Demands:

  • This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing all day. The employee must frequently lift and/or move items over 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.


Work Environment:

  • Non-temperature-controlled warehouse, non-temperature-controlled production floor, temperature-controlled production area, temperature-controlled office, maintenance shop.
