SENIOR METALLURGIST - PREMIUM MELTING (VIM, ESR, VAR)
This person provides a diverse range of technical product or process services to our internal and external customers supporting the attainment of Company and division goals. This position provides technical support to all aspects of Vacuum Induction Melt operations.
THE SENIOR METALLIRGIST - PREMIUM MELTING (VIM, ESR, VAR) WILL . . .
- Responsible for making disposition of referred, non-conforming and off-standard material, including but not limited to RMRs and customer claims.
- Demonstrates ability to provide training and education to customers. May provide support, leadership, and guidance to peers, customers, and managers in key projects.
- Will apply statistical methods to solve problems and design experiments. Assists in the use of SPC, six-sigma and/or BPI tools to detect project inefficiencies.
- Responsible for ensuring quality of melts by timely melt record review, verification of adherence to procedures, and frozen practice agreements with customers.
- Responsible for new procedure development and process optimization through application of process management and standardized work philosophy, establishment of meaningful CPV's and process tests, and variation reduction.
- Improvement of yield, productivity and cost reductions of melt operations.
- Evaluation and qualification of new raw material/refractory sources, specification review for new products, and participation in problem solving customer technical issues related to melting.
- This position will interact with operations, technical, R&D, purchasing, and quality personnel as well as providing technical support during customer audits.
- Perform all other duties and special projects as assigned.
- Four-year college degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science or related field required.
- 4+ years of relevant work experience required.
- Experience applying SPC, Six Sigma and BPI tools in the search for the elimination of manufacturing process inefficiencies.
- Experience initiating programs and projects, driving results on schedule and anticipating and mitigating risks.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, ability to organize and prioritize tasks and make appropriate decisions.
- Goal driven and self-directed.
- Ability to access mill and manufacturing areas.
- Ability to identify and predict future needs for alloy development and identify potential new products, processes and partners as well as champion innovative new ideas.
- Ability to make significant individual contribution to attainment of team objectives.
- Ability to travel on a limited basis.
- Collaboration - Work with management to develop and implement strategic plans or the company. Provide support, leadership and guidance to peers, customers and manager in key projects and opportunities. Proactively and independently mentor others.
- Customer Focus - Provide training and education to key customers. Anticipate and respond in a timely manner to internal and external customer needs and be an expert resource who is sought out for input.
- Ability to communicate and collaborate well with production operators on the shop floor to drive improvement in safety, quality, productivity and costs.
