The Wisconsin Humane Society (WHS) is hiring a full time Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to manage the financial operations of the organization, ensuring the organization's financial health and sustainability. This position provides strategic oversight and leadership to the IT, retail, and finance teams. This role can be hybrid and requires some onsite presence at our organization's seven locations, primarily at our Milwaukee location. The CFO reports to the President & CEO and serves as a key member of the organization's leadership team, participating in organizational strategic planning, decision-making, and policy development to support our mission.
Key Accountabilities
- Ensure the financial strength and sustainability of the Wisconsin Humane Society.
- Provide strategic oversight for all financial operations, including accounting, budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis.
- Develop and oversee the annual budgeting process, working closely with department managers and other stakeholders to develop realistic and achievable budgets.
- Monitor actual performance against budget and provide regular updates and analysis.
- Work closely with the President & CEO and leadership team to develop and implement strategic plans and goals that support the organization's mission and vision.
- Lead the finance committee and collaborate with committee members to provide strategic financial guidance and support to the organization.
- Prepare and present financial reports to the leadership team and board of directors, providing analysis and recommendations as needed.
- Provide sound financial framework for strategic planning and ongoing operations.
- Manage relationships with external partners, including banks, auditors, and other financial service providers.
- Supervise service providers in the financial, information technology, and retail areas.
- Ensure compliance with all financial and regulatory requirements, including tax filings, audits and other reporting requirements.
- Build effective IT, retail, and finance teams through hiring, leading, motivating, coaching, and developing staff.
- Oversee and supervise information technology operations by managing and collaborating with the IT Administrator to develop strategies and goals for the organization's IT systems.
- Work with the Retail Coordinator to establish, develop, and implement strategies to ensure retail achieves the annual budgeted goals and continues to grow as another revenue resource of the organization.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field, or equivalent experience; CPA and/or MBA desirable.
- At least five years experience as a CFO or equivalent, preferably in a nonprofit organization with a budget of at least $5 million, multiple funding sources, and multiple operating locations.
- Demonstrated leadership ability, team management, supervisory, and interpersonal skills.
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to deliver results.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Ability to work effectively with individuals from a wide variety of backgrounds.

The Wisconsin Humane Society (WHS) is the oldest and largest shelter in Wisconsin. It was founded in 1879 and operates shelters in Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Racine, Door, Brown, and Kenosha Counties, as well as a Spay/Neuter Clinic in West Allis. The organization offers adoption services, youth programming, and veterinary resources for animals from low-income households, retail stores, volunteer programs and dog training classes. The Milwaukee shelter also houses the state's busiest Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. WHS is an independent nonprofit and receives no general government funding and is not part of any national umbrella group.
