Job Profile Summary
This role focuses on preventing workplace accidents and promoting health and safety awareness and education to individuals within the organization. In addition, this role focuses on performing the following Associate Safety related duties: Prevents workplace accidents and promotes health and safety awareness and education for employees. A management role that supervises employees focusing on tactical, operational activities within a specified area, with the majority of time spent overseeing area of responsibility, planning, prioritizing and/or directing the responsibilities of employees. Goal achievement is typically accomplished through performance of direct and/or indirect reports. A role that supervises para-professional employees. Responsibilities that typically include: Setting day-to-day operational objectives for team, problems faced may be difficult but typically are not complex, and ensures policies, practices and procedures are understood and followed by direct reports, customers and stakeholders.
Job Overview
This position is responsible for the overall command and leadership of assigned staff within the department. Responsible for the supervision, development, and performance of assigned department staff in the day-to-day protection and safety of patients, staff and visitors and the security of hospital assets and information. If licensed as a Special State Police Officer, provide enforcement of the Criminal Laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. May also be responsible for program supervision/management and external relations.
Job Description
Minimum Qualifications:
- Associate degree in Criminal Justice or related area and three (3) years of experience as a public safety officer or related position OR High school diploma or equivalent and five (5) years of experience as a public safety officer or related position.
- Valid state issued driver's license.
- Possesses IAHSS Basic, Advanced, and Supervisory Officer Certifications.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Associate degree in criminal justice or related area.
- Five (5) years of healthcare security experience.
- Security or first responder certifications such as de-escalation/crisis response, CPR/AED, Stop the Bleed, or Nasal Naloxone Certification, etc.
- Graduate of an approved law enforcement training program or Police Academy and possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid POST Certification from the Commonwealth of MA.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a valid MA License to Carry Firearms.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities listed below are intended to describe the general nature of work and are not intended to be an all-inclusive list. Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned.
- Responsible for the overall operation & performance of assigned staff. Monitors staff performance, and makes recommendations to department leadership concerning commendations, promotions, disciplinary action, and/or training. Participates in the employee performance appraisal process by giving department leadership feedback on staff performance.
- Responsible for the supervision of the department's operations, including the assignment of personnel, communication within the department, and the on-scene command of incidents/events responded to.
- May provide program oversight to hospital initiatives, such as de-escalation training, security awareness, risk assessment.
- Provide leadership and professional development guidance to staff under their responsibility, including providing and documenting constructive feedback.
- In the absence of more senior-level department leadership, acts as the senior most representative of the department on Public Safety related matters, disaster response, or other operational issues involving the department and Hospital.
- Participate in the organizational development process by participating in process change and improvement activities. Make recommendations for process changes and take corrective action concerning process deviations.
- Review and approve all incident reports filed by staff under their responsibility. Initiates or delegates the commencement of initial investigations into incidents or crimes occurring on the Hospital campus.
- May perform public safety and/or police duties (if certified). Conduct internal and external patrols of all facilities and grounds. Respond to and report on both routine and emergency calls for service, restrain violent patients and/or visitors, monitor assigned area for suspicious activity, prepare and complete all daily logs and incident reports and ensure accurate and detailed reports. Screen vendors and visitors entering the facility, ensuring compliance with established procedures.
- If licensed as a Special State Police Officer, make appropriate arrests, and enforce the laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, including booking, arraignment, and court prosecution of arrestees, securing of evidence and conducting searches and seizures in compliance with Massachusetts General Laws and applicable court decisions.
- Identify issues, concerns, or conflicts requiring resolution, completely and impartially review each situation to obtain the necessary facts to formulate a resolution. Attempt to resolve situations within immediate control. Communicate all situations to superiors and actively participate in the response. Obtain all necessary facts to resolve issues, conflicts, and concerns within their control in an impartial manner and report those problems outside of their control to a superior for resolution.
- Provide excellent customer service by assisting and interacting with patients, visitors, and other hospital staff in a manner that conveys the highest level of dignity, respect, courtesy, and professionalism. Maintain composure under stressful circumstances. Strive to de-escalate situations when confronted with uncooperative or belligerent individuals.
- Actively participate and coordinate investigations, conduct interviews, review recorded video, prepare case files, catalog and secure evidence as required.
- Assist with all emergencies and disasters that may affect the Hospital, including: crowd control, evacuations and other responsibilities as directed.
- Maintain collaborative, team relationships with peers and colleagues to effectively contribute to the working group's achievement of goals, as well as to help foster a positive work environment.
- Monitors staff activity; coaches, counsels, and commends employees, as appropriate, on performance matters. Ensure that all personnel are performing in accordance with policies and established guidelines. Make recommendations for corrective action, additional training, and commendations.
- As assigned, functions as a training officer for newly hired public safety officers. Monitors the new hire training process.
- May be assigned to a rotating on-call schedule.
Physical Requirements:
- Professional office environment with typical office requirements such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, etc.
- Frequently required to speak, hear, communicate, and exchange information.
- Available to respond to any emergency or need to commence an investigation after normal working hours, carry a pager or other notification devices.
- Able to see and read computer displays, read fine print, and/or normal type size print and distinguish letters, numbers and symbols.
- Frequent standing and walking with the ability to stand and/or walk for eight (8) hours.
- Climb multiple flights of stairs.
- Lift fifty (50) pounds alone.
- Physically able to perform physical activities such as response to daily operations situations and emergency/disaster situations.
- Possibility of injury due to eviction of unauthorized persons, restraint of violent patients, arrests, etc.
- Exposure to various areas containing hazardous material and radioactive substances when performing patrols.
Skills & Abilities:
- Must possess strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and communicate effectively with individuals of diverse backgrounds.
- Ability to successfully complete all training requirements and courses established and/or provided by the department.
- Ability to multi-task and meet established deadlines.
- Ability to assess potentially dangerous situations quickly, make sound decisions based on the information present, and take appropriate action based on the information available.
- Skilled in emotional maturity, dependability, punctuality, diplomacy and tact with poise and self-confidence devoid of negative remarks.
- Must be trustworthy, helpful, friendly, courteous, and disciplined.
- Ability to read and write at a proficient level.
- Basic Computer Skills required.
