Palmer Candy is looking for a full time Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Manager to support safety efforts at all Palmer Candy locations.


Job Summary:

The Environmental Health & Safety Manager (EHS) is responsible for ensuring compliance with all safety rules and regulations, the physical security of all company locations, and to assist individuals to be in compliance with safety rules and regulations. As our Environmental Health & Safety Manager (EHS), you will lead our efforts to ensure our workplace is safe, healthy, and free of risks. The EHS Manager will serve as a subject matter expert on all safety, compliance, regulatory and related insurance requirements.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Champion a safety culture with zero incident mentality. Build management and colleague commitment and enthusiasm for safety through effective leadership and influence.
  • Provide training on new regulations, policies, and how to recognize hazards for existing and new Team Members.
  • Assist with management of and implementation of Safety Program including incident investigation, compliance, rules, permits, ergonomics, health and hygiene control, group communications, emergency preparedness, engineering controls, environmental and contractors.
  • Ensure training and documentation is maintained in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Conduct regular safety audits, identify and evaluate hazards in the workplace, and recommend solutions to minimize or eliminate risk.
  • Collaborate with appropriate departments to support workers’ compensation cases and follow appropriate HIPAA laws.
  • Assist with scope review, project planning, and recommended processes to mitigate employee exposure to workplace hazards.
  • Maintain safety awareness and consistency of safety program implementation by management personnel by providing current information on safety issues and continuously working with supervisors and managers to effectively handle safety-related issues.
  • Schedule meetings and organize events to provide information regarding workplace safety issues to employees and managerial personnel.
  • Manage workers’ compensation claims and OSHA reporting and maintain all OSHA logs.
  • Attend workers’ compensation appointments with Team Member when applicable.
  • Support all incident and near miss investigations to uncover root cause and track completion of corrective actions.
  • Stay current on Federal and State Safety and Food Security regulations likely to affect the company.
  • Analyze work environments and site standards as a basis for action required to improve conditions and to meet Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) standards, and informs management of areas not in compliance.
  • Facilitate safety meetings, review injury statistics and corrective actions, communicate department safety performance.
  • Advise Team Members on how to minimize or ultimately avoid risks and hazards in the workplace.
  • Assist with the creation and management of health and safety monitoring systems and policies in the workplace.
  • Manage emergency procedures (such as fire alarm drills) and organize emergency teams such as fire marshals and first aiders.
  • Review current PPE and makes suggestions for improvements. Review Safety Policies annually.
  • Coordinate Safety Campaigns Monthly.
  • Provide weekly updates to VP of Operations.
  • Maintain Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Knowledge and understanding of a multitude of health and safety regulations and policies with the ability to communicate the requirements effectively and assist the facility with implementation and management.
  • Proficiency in Office 365 products (Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel) as well as web-based programs
  • Strong experience and knowledge of safety and environment processes and procedures.
  • Strong leadership, training, problem solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Demonstrated organizational, communication, research, and analytical skills.
  • Experience and/or familiarity with OSHA, EPA, and DOT regulations.
  • Ability to read, comprehend and interpret technical procedures and governmental regulations.
  • Experience communicating with external agencies.
  • Experience with ergonomics and industrial hygiene a plus.
  • Ability to administer minor first aid.
  • Prior forklift training experience preferred.
  • Ability to communicate effectively across all functions within the plant and the ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships with individuals at all levels.

Education and Experience:

  • Experienced EHS Manager with 3-5 years of progressive responsibilities in a manufacturing environment, or equivalent training such as Safety Trained Supervisor certification.
  • Must have successfully completed 30-hour OSHA training.

Physical Requirements:

  • Office and manufacturing setting.
  • Occasionally required to balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, or twist.
  • Occasional lift up to 30 pounds and infrequently lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work in varying temperatures.
  • Must be able to climb stairs and ladders of various heights.
  • Flexibility to work different shifts and days for two manufacturing sites, warehouses and candy shop when required as well as take phone calls or come into work after regular work hours.
