Job DescriptionJob DescriptionDescription:

The Peer Mentor works directly with individuals with developmental disabilities to provide support to increase participation in the campus community on goals outlined in their individualized plans. The Peer Mentor will provide services within the classroom and campus community in order to promote independence, inclusion and quality of life. The Peer Mentor is responsible for implementing and monitoring services in compliance with State, Federal, and Center regulations and operating standards.


ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Activities may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Support an individual in the classroom or across the campus community as outlined in their individualized plan.
  • Provide tutoring or assistance in coursework.
  • Participate in activities as part of the InclusiveU team that may include meetings, trainings and committees.
  • Implement and monitor plans for people receiving services through the OPWDD Home and Community Based Waiver Program.
  • Delivery of direct services to individuals while assessing appropriateness of plan as developed, progress/regression, continued appropriateness of plan.
  • Oversee the safety and well-being of the individuals.
  • Maintain and regularly compile documentation to be reviewed by supervisor as required.
  • Ensure positive and effective communication and cooperation within and between department, division, center, family and community personnel.
  • Establish a work environment that creates positive communication between supervisors and employees and assimilates new employees to the culture, values and mission.
  • Ensure compliance with all pertinent government and center regulations and operating standards.
  • Legible handwriting.

WORK ENVIRONMENT/HAZARDS

Requirements:

QUALIFICATIONS/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS/EXPERIENCE

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred.
  • Must have understanding of the characteristics of persons with intellectual or developmental disabilities.
  • At least 1 year working with people with developmental disabilities is preferred.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • This position has regular and substantial unsupervised or unrestricted physical contact with individuals receiving services, therefore, is required by law to be fingerprinted for a criminal history record check under OPWDD (Office for People with Developmental Disabilities)
  • Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances are warranted.

REQUIRED ABILITIES

  • Maintain professional boundaries and confidentiality.
  • Regularly attend scheduled shifts and meetings, being punctual.
  • Exercise tact, discretion and judgment in working with a variety of people.
